Thank you!

PITCH BLACK is a short first-person horror survival game set inside an interplanetary space vessel. You, a worker on the spaceship, wake up disoriented after an unknown incident has occurred, causing a major power failure that left most of its corridors in complete darkness. Lacking a proper light source, your only means of navigation is the instructions a colleague gives you through a radio, as well as a laser pointer mounted to the gun you found. Additionally, you can make use of a motion sensor on your workpad, which can be used to identify potential threats lurking in the darkness.

This game attempts to emulate the dread felt when knowing and hearing potential disaster approaching you while being unable to identify it, as you have nothing but an inky black void before your eyes.

The game is free to play in a browser.

I quit my job becuase of this

In my endeavor to learn new skills, I experimented with some FPS mechanics, resulting in this short sci-fi shooter.

Features:

    -First Person

    -Approx. 10 minutes of playtime

-Fight your way through a post-apocalyptic city

-Kill biomechanical alien robots with stealth capabilities

    -Find and collect ammo

-Overcome lava pits, atomic waste etc...

Nice little game, impressive you made it in such a small amount of time!

nice one!

I refuse to testify about the monster design ;) Thanks for your feedback!

hehe thanks

Howdy, thank you very much for your input! I agree, one could make more out of this.

I'll probaby do some kind of remake of the game once I have aquiered better skills for myself. Theres a lot of stuff I'd like to have included in it but simply couldn't.

Thanks for playing

Thanks for giving it a shot!

Thank you!

Thanks for the kind feedback :) Cheers!

Dude got his coffee but his life still turned into a nightmare. Loved it, that creature really creeped me out!

It has a unsettling atmosphere, a nice world design and kept me excited to whole time. Couldn't pick up the key on the desk tho. But enjoyed it anyway.

Hey man, thanks for giving the game a shot! Enjoyed watching your playthrough.

Thank you. The structure, like walls, pipes, colums and also the monster were created in Blender. Some of the smaller stuff like the barrels or palets come from a free asset pack for unity.

- killed lots of bad guys

- saved the president

- diapers stayed clean

5/5

I created this mainly to put into practice things I learned from tutorials. I will leave it as it is for now in order to learn more and create better games in the future. Not going to abandon it completely, as I really like the concept. I might pick it up later in the form of a sequel or something.

Creating an environment where orientating oneself becomes a challenge was a goal of mine. Seems like I overdid it a bit (:

Thank you for the feedback!

Hey Stella, glad you enjoyed it.

Cheers!

Enjoyed it, especially the sound design.

love the art style

Thanks!

So cool seeing someone else playing the game :) Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback!

Hey Niven, thank you for your detailed feedback! The idea behind the space key mechanic was to make it feel a bit more like "swimming" and to have something different than the usual WASD controls. But very obviously, "different doesn't always translate into better. So yes, I'm going to do a rework of the controls.

Done.

Depths Of Contamination by Alx Frsh (itch.io)

Announcement: Depths of Contamination - A short first-person underwater horror game - Release Announcements - itch.io

As recently announced in my devlog here: https://itch.io/t/2934209/making-my-first-game-first-person-underwater-horror

I have just finished my first game, which was now released.

What is it about? Depths of Contamination is a first-person diving simulator that revolves around claustrophobia and atmospheric exploration. You must navigate through a dark and unclear underwater environment, with time working against you as your oxygen supply continually dwindles.

Plot: In the aftermath of a devastating environmental catastrophe, suspicions arise regarding a flooded mill on the outskirts of a small town. Rumors suggest that hazardous chemicals were mishandled within the mill, potentially posing a significant threat to the surrounding ecosystem.

Unable to determine the truth due to conflicting water sample results, the authorities make a crucial decision—to dispatch a professional diver to investigate the submerged mill and uncover any signs of dangerous materials.

It is free and lasts about 10 minutes. I would appreciate it very much if someone gave it a shot =)

  • Well, everything did go as planned. I have a fully playable game loop - minus the UI because I forgot to set all the canvases to full HD, so everything looks off at the moment. Fixing this should not be a problem, however.

Now, this is the plan: I will playtest this a couple more times to identify any potentially game-breaking bugs. I have not found any so far. Then, I will send it to a friend so he can playtest it on his laptop and check if anything is off.

And then - a game page has already been created - if this also goes as planned, I'm going to release my first game in 3-4 days =).

    Time for a quick update.

    Made some progress:

Sound, as mentioned in my last post, is implemented.

Post-processing has been implemented. I fear that to achieve the exact atmosphere I aimed for, I would have had to use HDRP, but it's okay.

I have implemented half of the UI, including the death screen and different status messages, etc.

I have a prototype for a main menu.

Currently, I am working on the main mechanics, such as decreasing the oxygen tank, death, and the main events of the game.

If everything goes as planned, I will be able to make the first build next week :)

    Alright!

So I'm mostly done with the game world. Up until now, I've created everything in Blender, but it still looks a bit empty, so I might look for a good industrial assets pack. Let's see...

The center of my attention is now sound, mainly underwater ambiance, as well as a rebreather sound. Luckily, I found some matching CC0 samples. Furthermore, I took care of the lighting, which in this case means removing all of it. Then, I created a flashlight and added a sway effect to it.

I also added a particle system that emits particles in the direction of the player's camera to simulate the dirt moving around underwater. The next thing to take care of is post-processing.

    thank you

Ok - here is a brief update:

I'm currently still busy building the game world. I'm almost done doing so, though it has taken longer than expected. Unfortunately, UV unwrapping/mapping feels like rocket science :)

I'm a bit conflicted about the character controller. The current one uses a standard Mouselook script, along with a functionality that adds a (decreasing) impulse force in the direction the player is facing, basically simulating a swimming stroke. However, divers usually have flippers, which makes this mechanic inaccurate. Nonetheless, I do think it would be more interesting this way.

Anyway, I'll make a bigger update when I'm done with modeling.

So after about 3 months of absorbing Unity tutorials, I decided it's time to actually make my first game. My main goal for this is to set up a project and actually finish it without letting myself be distracted by other ideas, of which I have plenty.

Scope: I do understand the importance of setting realistic goals, so I'm aiming for a short (5-10 min) walking (or in this case: diving) simulator. The inspiration mostly comes from binge-watching videos on YouTube of people getting lost/stuck in caves, people diving shipwrecks, and stuff like that.

    Here's a basic plot:

In the aftermath of a devastating environmental catastrophe, suspicions arise regarding a flooded mill on the outskirts of a small town.

A simple character controller is already implemented, and I'm currently building the game world.

I'll update this regularly to keep myself motivated and responsible. See you :)

    Love Matts humor
