discovering mainstream games on itch.io

while using itch.io more recently i've felt like i want a way to browse what mainstream/more popular games are available (in addition to those popular/recommended on itch.io). whenever i'm interested in a game that i've heard about i can always check to see if it's available on itch.io , but that only goes so far. the popular tab when browsing games doesn't necessarily reflect the overall popularity of the game outside of itch.io because some games while more popular don't actually get many sales on itch.io.

i decided to start to build a collection of games that i know are popular outside of itch.io. i hope this list can be helpful for other folks browsing for the next game to get on itch.io.

what do ya'll think of this? any suggestions for games to add?

I am not sure what you mean with the term mainstream. While "indie" is a quality sometimes boasted about, indie games are in general not mainstream.

Itch itself is somewhat obscure. There are games on your list that I knew of, before I even knew, that itch exists, let alone that those games would be sold here.

While not accurate, this list might have at least some "mainstream" games, if you equate steam with mainstream.

And as a fun trivia, there a games here on itch that bother to tag indie.

yeah you bring up some good points. it's definitely a nebulous area. honestly i do find the steam key metadata interesting. one problem with it is that not all games released on steam and sold on itch provide a steam key on purchase.

Of course not. But at least we know that they are on steam, if they are on that list.

Another list might be the top seller list of paid games. Or the iOS list.

The game list has some 890k entries. The iOS list only 4.5k, paid only 24k, steam keys only 2.4k

I estimate that any successful games (outside of itch) are on one or more of those lists. The games with minimum price 0 but a bonus tier with a price offering the full game might be missing. They might be found under regular top sellers. Example would be Doki Doki Literature Club. That one is on steam (for free), is pay what you want here but sells a fan pack, if you paid more than a certain amount.

The first list has "Where are the goats" as first game. I laughed because is like, the start of a full list of GOATS.  A Short Hike, Bastion, Noita, Celeste, Pikuniku... Is a combination of various games that I know but also several that I don't. But I can see how these games are like the famous things of Itch.
