Tag logic and filter options to navigate the site more easily

Since the site's own search often works less well than just using Google and adding "site:itch.io", I for one rely heavily on tags and collections to navigate the site.

  1. It would be really useful if their was a more extensive boolean system (e.g. OR, XOR, AND NOT) for the tags, instead of just AND. For example, one might want to find all games with the tag combination (CYOA OR Interactive Fiction) AND NOT (Horror OR (Romance AND Furry)), or whatever.
  2. Besides tags there are several filters, such as Platform and Price, but there are also filters missing which would be very useful. For example, a filter for Status (Released, In development, On hold, Demo, etc.).
  3. And while the Type-filter allows to filter positively for HTML5, Downloadable and Flash, it does not allow to filter against Flash, JavaScript or WebGL.
  4. It would also be nice if you could search your own library or collections. For example, if I want to pull up all games in my "To do" collection with the tag Sci-fi.
  5.  Edit: And to sort alphabetically, chronologically, by rating, etc.

Just some ideas for quality of life improvements, which hopefully haven't been repeatedly posted before (I certainly was not able to find them from a quick search).

I certainly was not able to find them from a quick search

Then your google skills and eye sight are lacking. Look above. No, not at the ceiling. At the top of this sub forum, the sticky threads.

There is a released filter you can add. It is hidden. Either have a look at the link directory at the bottom of the browse page. Or click released in the info box of any game.

...Yeah, that serves me right for being polite. I should have known better. 🙄

> At the top of this sub forum, the sticky threads.

Clearly, you must be seeing completely different sticky threads than I am, with those magical eyes of yours, or you have completely misunderstood my post. But if there is any post hidden inside the eleven pages of sticky threads that does in fact touch upon any, let alone all, of my suggestions, then the fact that it does not appear when searching is simply further evidence of how terrible the site's search function is, not just in the browse games section but also here in the community section...

> There is a released filter you can add.

I am suggesting, among other things, the addition of a Status filter, not a page that lists recently released games.

> It is hidden.

Why?

> Either have a look at the link directory at the bottom of the browse page.

Again, you have clearly either misunderstood me or are seeing a complete different webpage that I am.

> Or click released in the info box of any game.

That would require first finding a game with the same Status I wish to filter by... Not a very user-friendly approach.

I told you were to look and there are only 3 sticky threads in this sub forum. And even with a bland search term like "tags" or "filter", you will find an abundance of threads with that very topic.

The released filter is "hidden", because there is no link to it in the left side bar.

And I told you none of my search terms,  turned up any relevant results nor any results whatsoever from the sticky threads.

"Why is this so?" "Because it is so." ... Great answer 🤦

I will grant you a third and final opportunity to either demonstrate an iota of civility or, in the more likely event that you cannot (judging by your many displays of bellicosity and truculence towards others), to hold your peace.

I got the word hidden out of the thread in the link below. It is two days older than your thread. It has the word filter in the title. On the same page is a sticky, with the word tag in it. You literally wedged a topic with filter and tag in your title between threads with filter and tag in title, yet claimed in the thread, that you certainly could not find any previous stuff. Maybe laugh about not seeing the trees for the forest, instead of whatever you did.

And after you finally do see the irony yourself, maybe with this new information read my initial post in this thread again.

Since you decided to double-down yet again on your rude and quarrelsome misbehavior, I won't be foolish enough to waste my time reading anything from you ever again. Kindly get bent.

Edit: With that dealt with, let us return to my initial ideas & feedback, before the repeated attempt to hijack this thread without properly reading my original post and ignoring most of it.

Ohhh, answering to a post is now hijacking a thread. Interesting.

Kindly get bent.

Uhm. Yeah. Nice talking to you. But accusing me of bellicositiousy and truculence. You have a thing for irony, don't you

Also, the released is what you want it to be.

I am suggesting, among other things, the addition of a Status filter, not a page that lists recently released games.

Please try again. You get regular browse page, with the filter pre-added and can regularly construct a browse filter with that.

Here, an example link. Notice how you can change the filter option release-status. But thank you for bringing attention to this. It might be a bug. Or just a bad pragmatic design choice. You will notice that lot's of devs use this particular attribute wrong. So you will find "released" games that are actually in development and games that are marked with "in development", but are done or even abandoned. The abandoned part might be the reason why it is not part of the options you regularly see to the left for filtering. It is a rather inaccurate filter.

Thank you for this and also promoting civility.

To redonihunter: There are people here who won't just search one thing all the time. I am a totally blind person, for one, and would like to filter by games that are both text-based, and have turn-based combat, and can't even do that anymore.

Your replies also look incredibly smug. Do you have an ounse of empathy in you? Someone was asking for help. You, instead of helping, started by asking them to look with their magical eyes. Has it occured to you that they already didd? It's not as simple. Have you considered blindness? Autism? Web technicality skills? Why hide tagsf rom power users?

I came across this post by searching for tag filtering  and holy hell I swear I see this absolutely insufferable guy in every post

Elect questions WHY it is hidden but redo answers HOW it is hidden.

Heres what the mod answered to that question.

> “No, a good UI for it was simply never added. The site is very complex by now and there are tons of little details to juggle.“

Getting back to topic
Here’s a post that links a list of this same issue from 3 years ago

https://itch.io/t/1236107/actual-working-tag-exclusion

There’s also this GitHub link talking about the same issue

https://github.com/itchio/itch.io/issues/738

I only ever find itchio games from other websites, I don’t use it to search for games or look for something new because of how user unfriendly the site as a whole is, and it’s such a shame since so many people use this site for indie games.
I wonder how many years it’s gonna take

P.S it’s funny how the first thing redo does is insult someone’s eyesight and a year later someone blind responds.
