Common Tropes in Anime and Manga Sticky

Hey everyone! I'm making this in a bit of a hurry, but I wanted to kick things off for others to add to as well.

What are tropes in anime and manga that you've seen quite a bit of? Are there any that are specific to a certain genre?

Some that I've noticed tends to transcend genres include:

  • Golden Retriever/Black Cat Friendships: Those wonderful friendships made up of a bubbly extroverted friendly personality and a quiet introverted brooding vibe. Some examples include from Hunter x Hunter: Gon Freecss x Killua Zoldyck; Princess Connect! Re: Dive: Pecorine x Karyl; Tomo-chan is a Girl: Misuzu Gundou x Carol Olsten.
  • Zero to Hero:  A fairly common trope in media, it still holds a strong place in different genres of anime. The main character goes from being pretty bad at what they're trying to accomplish to absolutely rocking it, usually through a lot of training or hard work. Some examples include My Hero Academia: Izuku Midoriya; Shield Hero: Naofumi Iwatani; Haikyuu!!: Hinata Shoyo.
  • Beach/Hot Springs Episode: Typically used as a filler and a great excuse for some fan service, this happens when the main group of characters decide to go to a beach or hot springs. This seems to be especially in a ton of anime these days. Some examples include Bleach: Episode 228; Lovely Complex: Episode 6; Blue Exorcist: Episode 11.

aw this seems like a cool jam (cuz I’m a huge anime and manga fan ) but idk how to make a ttrpg

Oh, there are many different ways! The best thing I can recommend is hacking a lightweight game. I just submitted "I Fell Into an Isekai Once", which is a fun system to hack. I also recommend Honey Heist, Lasers and Feelings, Tunnel Goons, or 24xx. They're all open source :)

Hi! I’d be glad to help you! But first we need to establish some basis.

How much free time have you got? Have you got an online place you like to hang or do we stay here?

Can you picture the (imaginary) people who would play your game? What feeling and emotion do you aim for? What setting do you imagine?

I like the “lightbulb moment”, when a solution appears to the hero.ine. I like it because it means the writer has prepared a reveal. And by the time it happens, if I’m still watching it, it’s because I like the writing style and the reveal will be good (to me).

Oh I love those moments! Especially when it's drawn out *just* enough to keep you guessing for a bit. Iirc, Dr. Stone did a great same-episode version of this in the first season or so all the time :3
