Can we take away 'Story' from the rating criteria?

There are plenty of games (ours included) that dont have a story and are more typically arcade games or maybe sim games. I would say that of the dozen or so games I've rated so far only 1 or 2 tried to incorporate an actual story. This is going to cause a lot of inconsistency in rating story-less games - e.g. do they get a 1-star rating in this category for no story, or just a 3-star rating because the story isn't good or bad per se? I've been dropping 3-stars but who know how everyone else is doing it.  When it comes to establishing an 'overall' rating there will be some very on-point on-theme games that dont get properly recognised because of this specific rating category.

Agreed on that. Best any non-story driven game is going to get would be a 3 all things considered... Unless someone really loved the game and decided to 5 star the lot.

Hope the 'overall' score can have a lower weighting for 'story' or indeed be stripped from the scoring altogether.

Edit: Overall category was removed since the 2022 jam. So please disregard the above... https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-game-jam-2021/results

Story is an important aspect of games and I'm glad it was included. It's definitely one that's hard to incorporate in a short time frame, and a game doesn't have to have a story to be good. But if most games have little to no story and are getting low ratings in the story category, then that's going to be reflected in the average while still allowing games with stories to shine in that category. Even if a game with no story gets nothing but 1 star ratings in the story category, there are 7 categories, so it can still have a high overall rating if people rate it highly in the other categories.

I dont disagree with what you are saying re: story, but as a judging category every game can we judged on Fun, Theme, Aesthetics and Mechanics. 'Audio' should probably account for both Music & Sound as 1 rating category and Story in my view should contribute towards the Fun & Theme scores rather than be separated, because not all games can be fairly judged on this category like they can on the others. Its just a game jam so its not the end of the world - the point was it will be approached inconsistently and result in inaccurate overall ratings. So perhaps it can be accounted for in the weightings as the other poster said.

You make good points. I think the bigger issue is that it's inherently not fair to judge all games on exactly the same criteria, because different things make different types of games good. It would be great if there could be separate categories each with their own criteria. But it is just a game jam and something we're all doing for fun. :)

And yeah, having two categories for audio is definitely going to hurt my game's ratings because I don't know anything about sound design, and I wasn't prepared to learn new skills for a 10 day game jam. So... my game has no sound. lol But I knew what the judging criteria were when I started. I'm still getting lots of good feedback and that's the important part.

But what about those that did do a story since it was part of the criteria? I can understand wanting to ask for that before hand but once it's over we kinda have to stick by the rules.

That was kind of my thinking. The judging criteria was announced in advance.

If a game doesn't have a story, I give it one star for Story which is the lowest rating. If a game doesn't have music, I give it one star for Music. If a game doesn't have sound or voice effects separate from music, one star for Sound. This doesn't reflect the scores I give for other aspects of the game.

The point of having separate categories is so not every game is judged on one single thing, no game is expected to be the best at everything. Doing well in one category and poorly in another is not a bad thing, this helps you to see your strengths and weaknesses. You can then decide if you want to focus on areas you may feel need improvement or if you'd rather concentrate on what you're already good at to become even better.

There isn't intended to be an 'overall' rating and for one game to come out on top over everything else. Here are the results of last year's jam: https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-jam-2022/results They're separated by category the same as this year. The game which is #1 in story is #409 in mechanics. The game which is #1 in sound is #430 in fun. These numbers are relevant to the people who made these games, but they aren't meant to be directly compared in a single package.

I wasn't aware that there isn't an 'overall' rating that gets produced based on all the category scores - that's how every other jam I've participated in so far has worked. If this is the case then it's not really a problem.

Ah. The soft 'overall' category was removed since the 2022 jam. I take back my previous comment :) See the 2021 jam for how it worked:
