What a fun idea!! :D I loved the character designs soo much and how it used 3D and 2D together. Awesome work!

Interesting story. The bar scene / sound effects were really well put together. The art and animations were great as well. Good job!

  • Thinks I liked:
    • I liked that you could give your own character a name.
    • Nice artwork and animations!
    • Audio made me feel like i was in a bar.
    • Love the mix of 2D and 3D set pieces.
    • Like how characters in front of you fade in and out the further you get away from you. Solves the issue with things in front of the camera nicely and adds to the feel that you are walking through crowds of people.
    • Love how many options you can get for character dialogue. However when the list is so large half the screen is covered maybe you should trim it down lol!
    • I found the conversations humorous at times. Nice work.
  • Things that could be improved:
    • I think you could put controls like "Press space to continue" on the text boxes or in the game itself
    • Mapping keys to escape for a webgl game can make things difficult for those that play in fullscreen.
    • When you advance the dialogue, the game flashes between the game view and the conversation drawings. It makes me feel like im bugging out the game.
    • When i choose dialogue options (like with the snake for instance) it keeps circling back to the same question and giving different responses. Because of that it doesn't really feel like i am having a conversation. Its more like talking to someone that has amnesia.
    • When i talk with "Kat" at one point when i say he can play the keyboard he says "sounds like a plan." Then when i ask the follow-up question of whether he wants to join he says no. Very misleading conversation system.
    • The game ends with a blurry screen of the band playing. would be nice if there was a button to retry or return to the main menu.

Thank you for taking the time to write this detailed review, and thank you for your feedback about artwork animation and audio!

  • Good point about adding the controls to the screen while playing. I added the control documentation late, and I didn’t have time to map them to the screen, but I’ll definitely make time to do that next time.
  • The point about escape is a good one. I mostly tested it on controller, so I didn’t notice, but that’s good to keep in mind.
  • I’m a little confused about what you mean about “circling back to the same question”. Are you referring to the conversation hub each character has? Would you have preferred if the character said something different each time you returned to the hub?
  • I get your point about the confusion with Kat, that response was added late, and I seen now how that could be misinterpreted to mean that Kat has already agreed to join you.
  • As far as the game ending on the screen of the band playing, if you wait for the song to end, it will eventually circle back around to the main menu, but a button to skip back to the menu would’ve been a good idea.

At any rate, these are great things to think about and I appreciate your feedback :)

Yeah i guess conversations don't typically have a hub. Some games that do have hubs usually just have the questions there not the same line said by the other character unless its something like "Is there anything else you would like to know?"  I feel that a better way to handle this would be to reveal other dialogue options when other previous questions have been asked like in this example:

Well, that was fun to play.

What did I like:

  • First of all the characters starting with the protagonist. One instantly has positive feelings about him, watching how his mates all let him down but he keeps doing his thing. The other characters are all unique and well written with all their backstories. Some of them are super lovely, some are dudes that I would not like to have around me. It's really a success to make players feel like this about characters. Great job!
  • The art style and the 3D + Sprites approach. The characters sprites are lovely designed and also showing other guests just as silhouettes is a great move that sells the scene. The stage is always visible so that one always has the goal in mind and the dialogue system used supported the nice text animations too. (I think i remember this. Its a free plugin right? Or have you implemented this yourself?).
  • The multiple choice conversations. Some where quite hard at the start. For example the NFT guy was hard to grasp. What kind of answer would a guy like this prefer? It got better after the first 2 answers ^^. In the end I didn't felt like asking him into the band, same for the deer ;). I like how the conversations are used to sell the characters and shape the players opinion about them. Very well executed.

What I want to mention:

  • Maybe I just did not realize it but did the choice, who plays what really change the last song?

What can be improved:

  • I accidentally made Tony my Guitar guy and I would have loved to correct this afterwards by reassigning him to another instrument. But that's the only thing here I can think of when it comes to further improvement.

The Story was unique and the gameplay was fun.

Thanks for the hard work and props to all of you :)

Thanks for the detailed feedback, I’m glad you seemed to enjoy it!

I was definitely trying to make sure that it wasn’t always 100% obvious which answer was correct, and was based on their personality. I made it so that you only needed 3/5 correct answers, so there’s a bit of leeway.

The song does change based on who you pick. Basically, for each instrument there’s a “good” and a “bad” version. The biggest differentiator is definitely the keyboard, it’s a bit harder to tell with the others unless you’re paying attention.

As far as changing the assignments, that’s not a bad idea. I was trying to make the dialogue as naturalistic as possible, so you can only do each dialog branch once, and once they’ve made up their minds, they won’t change it. That being said, there’s no reason you couldn’t reassign people.

Right. Especially since it's not about telling them suddenly: "Uhm, you're not in the band anymore." but just making up your mind which instrument they should play, which can happen since: Hey that dude there is a professional keyboard player and you told be you can play the guitar as well - would you mind switching to guitar? :)

What a fun concept! The character art was lovely, and getting to meet them all was great. I accidentally asked the NFT bro to play with me instead of Sarah :/ But I did get Tony Macaroni on drums, so I wouldn’t count my run as a total failure lol

Developer(+1)

Yess Tony macaroni is <3. The NFT bro was my favorite to write even though I disagree with every word he says lol.

Oh, no. But there is music at the end! I added volume sliders to the game right before release, so the music may have been too quiet.

The music is like the most important part, oh no!

I liked the concept and thought you did a great job writing the different characters. The art style was cool and I thought you nailed the ambient sound of the bar. Overall, nice work!
