Hey! First of all: Gratulations to a released game :)

Short version:

What I loved:

  • Atmosphere, UI, Inventory system

What can be improved:

  • Enemy sounds, Less random levels, A more definitive game over screen when won

Detailed Review:

I really like the atmosphere drawn by the color and pattern of the wall and the floor. Also the light, fog and contrast works well to get a (good) unpleasant feeling ^^. I think it could even be a bit darker in the bright light places.

For my taste, the grinning enemies are a bit to friendly looking ^^ but they remind me of the grinning cat of Alice in wonderland. Maybe making their eyes squint more the farer there away could help inducing a bit more fear, or having them slowly turning to the player ^^. Definitely some gurgling sound would be cool ^^.

At first i wondered what it is with the computers but then I found those giving you the hints. Nice thinking!

Level progression felt mixed. At some points it was really good on other occasions the exit was next to the entrance, so -  as people told me on many of my games too - a bit less random a bit more curated procedural generation could help here. Having an actual good looking inventory and more than just 1 energy and 1 health item definitely gives bonus points :).

I like the jitter effect and although the map is just ASCII it works really well will the rest of the look and feel. Nice and functional main UI all in all.

When I reached the end in my first and second run I read the text and then I found myself with full health and power back in a level. So I thought these runs might be connected ^^. After the 3rd run I suddenly saw the main menu again. Maybe I clicked it away very fast the first times. Here a more definitive - You won the game - at some point would be nice i think.

All in all a good experience!

Thank you!

Thank you for the detailed feedback, I really appreciate it :)

Especially about the random level generation. I think it's a great idea to add more curation to it, maybe come up with interesting set pieces and try make each level internally consistent in its logic. Lots of opportunity to improve!
