Credit clarification

Okay!  This will be the first full game I've ever completed.   Particularly, this will be the first thing I've worked on that would truly fall into the category of "commercial use."  As such, I've never really worried about credits and the like since I really only made stuff for my friends and me.  For those of us having to worry about this for the first time, what PRECISELY should be in the credits section for RPGMaker MZ  and the resources in the RTP.   The few resources from outside of the program included rather detailed instructions from the creators ("include this in the game credits" sorta notes.)   One Mod implied that what I put in my credits might not be right, but when I asked for clarification, I think they didn't realize that's what I was asking.   Other than vague confirmation that there should be credit mentioned, there's nothing else that I  can find!

Please help!   Can't make my   ending credits until I get clarification!

Jam Host

Hey there and thanks for asking!

To be safe, just credit everything that's used in your game. Sometimes, something as simple as a language barrier can create unnecessary confusion, ultimately leading to issues. Whether you do it as a text file, or include it within your game, just credit everything.

Please let us know if you need any more clarification.

I'm   wondering what exactly I'm supposed to include for the RTP and RPGMaker MZ themselves.  All of my non-RPGMaker standard resources came with  clear instructions, which I['ve followed.     I'm   aware that credit is required for the use of RPGMaker,   but not what that credit should look like.

Jam Host

Although I think that anything that comes with RPG Maker MZ doesn't need to be credited, if you want to you can use "Komodo" (although they were "Degica Games" at the time...)

I've been specifically told I have to credit Kamodo, but not how.    All I was told was that my crediting I  suggested was wrong.  When I asked for clarification, they never answered.   At this point, I'm just going to   submit it as is and if they don't like it they can tell me what to change it to.  I've made a good faith effort to credit everyone whose work I've used.

Jam Host

I understand. I believe that I've been clear on crediting Komodo, but if you need an additional explanation from me, I'll go ahead and do my best. I apologize for Komodo not replying to you. I'm not sure what's going on there.

If there is a problem with how your game credits others, and from our conversations I don't believe that there will be, I'm certain someone will reach out to you.

I'm looking at this - EULA | RPG Maker | Make A Game! (rpgmakerweb.com)

[Appendix] Terms of Game Distribution, etc -> Article 3 -> Point 2, it says to credit Gotcha Gotcha Games, so I'm just doing that for now. I don't know where it says Komodo but I'm sure if they want you to add it they'll let you know

Jam Host

Hey there! Either will be fine for the contest. The judges will know what you are referring to, so no worries. The credits would be fixed before the game goes up on Steam.

I finally put in the end credits:

"Made using RPGMaker MZ,

A product of Gotcha Gotcha Games,

Published by Komodo Co., Ltd."

Looks good over here. :-)

I'm not familiar with everything you're using, so I can't say. The format looks good, however.

the link goes back to the site where I took the iconset image to use, so I inserted the link so that any player who wants to see the Johan86 material can access it. The basic project of visustella is their sample game, which contains a pack of basic and freely distributed plugins. I will enter the site here for confirmation:   https://visustella.itch.io/visumz-sample

the rest is as the person above did his, after all, would be the mandatory credits.

I would like to clear two more questions about the project.
1- There are more than 300 creators engaged in the contest, correct? Well, as obvious as it sounds, that means the wait to find out the winners will be during the time the 300+ games will be played, I suppose, am I correct? Up to 300 hours.
2-Taking advantage of question one, all of the more than 300 games submitted will be available for fans to rate: a) for how long or until what date? b) can anyone vote or do they need to be registered on itch.io? - I ask this because there are contests in which people only enter to vote only by nomination without even knowing why they are voting, that is, a creator can benefit from receiving votes from people who have not played the game... I would like to take away these doubts.
Ah... I almost forgot... As for images - I did some in drawing myself, made on the computer but do you mind that there are real images mixed with a game with the basic graphics of rpg maker mz? I found copyright free images but they are real images and I don't know if you will use as criteria something like "What did this creator do? Nothing to do with mixing real images with games...." Thank you very much in advance!!

Hey there, let me answer those questions:

1. That is correct. If there are 300 entries, then each one will get played at least once, if not more. Every entry gets at least one playthrough.

2. The "Fan Favorite" vote starts when Judging starts. Anyone who can reach the voting page will be able to vote, which is the general public.

3. So long as those images aren't of real, existing people (outside of yourself), then that is fine.

300 entries at 8 hours a day would take almost 40 days. I assume there is some sort of screening process.

I'm not sure how many of the 311 that  have joined(it may be more now, but that's the last number I noticed)  will actually manage to submit.  I know that there have been several who have declared that they were not able to complete their submission for one reason or another.    Then you will have the inevitable list of people who don't fit the qualifications for one reason or another.  Many of the games won't be a full hour of gameplay.  I wouldn't be surprised if there are more 30 minute games than full hour ones.

Either way, this will take some doing.  I'm guessing that the fan favorite candidates will end up getting narrowed quickly as people will choose which games to spend time trying out based on descriptions and screenshots.  It would be interesting to hear how long the judging period would be, however, as if there are even half of that number of hours worth of submissions, it will still take over a month probably (I'm guessing that unpaid judges aren't going to work 8 hour shifts for a month to judge this contest.)

I'd expect that most games would try to err more towards 40 minutes due to the 20 minute minimum and the rules require a minimum of 20 minutes. (my game can be speedrunned in about 5 minutes if you skip all dialogue and content, but is currently set up to require about 40-90 minutes of proper gameplay to finish. The problem is that speedruns can drastically shorten a game's length, which is especially bad in story focused games and lore focused games like mine.

What I've learned from the past is that fan favorites will be heavily determined by existing fanbases. The bigger your existing fanbases, the more call to action you can pull.

Jam Host

Allow me to address this: "The problem is that speedruns can drastically shorten a game's length, which is especially bad in story focused games and lore focused games like mine."

While I cannot speak for the Fan Favorite award, for the Top Three places, the judges will each judge based on their own criteria. Therefore, if your game is heavy-story, some judges will focus more on that, while others may focus more on gameplay, and others may focus more on aesthetic. Getting the four judges that we did (each who are experts in different aspects of Game Development) was on purpose. That way, each game gets different viewpoints before it moves up or down in the ranks, instead of just relying on one thing (like a story-focused judge playing a game with little story, etc.)

Jam Host

The judges will very likely be playing and judging for the entirety of the month of August. However, we won't know that exactly 100% until they are moving through their games for the first round of judging.

Jam Host

To my knowledge and recollection, the screening process is just to make sure that the games aren't viruses, or straightup adult-only.

Having said that, there's barely over 100 entries. So, if you're worried that the judges won't be able to play them all, it's a non-issue.

You know that human nature is to wait to the last second, right? inb4 500 new entries and 250 submissions in the last minute of the contest.

What if my game deletes itself and all saves if you choose to use the ultimate ultimate skill "World Crusher"? Would that count as a virus?

*Stares at the insanity skill which does random effects* or if one of my skills has a chance of deleting all of your save files?

Jam Host

Of course we know that, and we've prepared for a rather enormous set of entries. We can't really speak to what the judging schedule will be like until we know the exact number of submissions.

And if your game gets flagged by a virus scanner, like Norton or McAfee, then it's considered a virus. Not so much if you use clever coding. ;-)

My credits will be forthcoming, I had to push them back or I would not have been able to finish even the very, very unfinished hot mess that I submitted at the last minute! Rest assured I have the right to use all resources in the game commercially, I just need to set aside a couple hours to write out clear and complete credits.

I understand this is important and I will do everything possible to address it within a reasonable timeframe, but I have been crunching with very little sleep for more than 48 hours so I need to take a moment to refresh my physical and mental health first.

Oh no!  Hurry!  there's only an hour and a half to go!

Jam Host

Please do not bring harm to yourself. While it's awesome that you want to do it correctly and quickly, it's not worth your health.

I was checking Credits now and found out that I forgot to specify one of the authors of graphic assets in the final version. Can I additionally specify a list of credits in the description of the game page? Or upload the corrected list as a separate text file. It will be sad if I am disqualified because I missed something in a hurry...
