Have you tried changing your system locale to Japanese? With Japanese games, this is a very common issue as most PC's for overseas users are set to English or another language. 

Please try following the steps below:

1.Select "Settings" from "Start". 
2. Select "Time & language".
3. Select "Japanese" from "Language" and install the language pack. 
4. Reboot the PC to apply the change. 

* Change the system locale and log in to an account with administrator privileges. 
* Add Japanese language to the PC. Please be reassured that the language of your PC will not change.

Hi, yes my system locale had already been set to Japanese and I installed the language pack before getting the game.

If that is the case, the issue might come from the unzipping software used. 

Generally, this developer recommends "Lhasa" or "The Unarchiver". 

Please try re-downloading the game file and unzipping with one of these tools.

I tried with Lhasa (was not really sure where to get it, it was on a few different sites in different versions) since I do not have a mac I did not try Unarchiver and the game still doesn't work.
