The connection was supposed to be the story's theme: Colt learns to take control of the parts of his life over which he has agency (his relationship with his son) by his encounter with a pilot whose life has been thrust so dramatically out of control. I understand that that's not everyone's cup of tea, though, and it was pretty hidden.
