The icon for the ship on the map mode isn't representative of its real size, so you have to line it up pretty well to hit the asteroid. if you look at it in the normal view, you can see it miss or explode. unless there's a bug I haven't found, but i've never seen it not explode. You can cruise by throttling down the thrusters, but not sure if that's what you mean
