How about creating an improved version of it? If you take snippets of the code, no one will mind, but simply editing it wouldn't be okay with me.

I completely understand wanting to continue a project if it fits the theme perfectly.
However, it's not fair to those starting from scratch. As I said, take models, snippets of scripts, sounds, and graphics, but only to a degree that you could stand behind with a clear conscience.
That's just my opinion, though. I'm not the jam creator, just another participant.
If your idea is a bit too big for the timeframe, then make it significantly smaller and simpler. And if you still haven't finished it completely, that's okay too. The journey and the enjoyment of creating are what matter.
