Really wish authors would stick to their guns and just leave the female protagonist as female only instead of caving and adding the pronoun nonsense in a later update. It seems every time a VN is female only, there's whining to insert gender selection and pronouns... as if there aren't plenty of VNs that have the option to choose already. May as well remove the Otome label, since it no longer fits.

this!!! i get the goal of inclusion, but if a creator has a certain vision for their game, they should be allowed to stick to it without having to compromise. a female only otome deserves the same respect as one with gender options. let creators tell the story they set out to tell.

Ngl, I'm getting pretty jaded at this point. People pushing for it always come across like having a female protag only is somehow a terrible thing and bigoted, along with other nonsense. I don't have a problem with VNs having the choice from the jump or w/e, my problem is with the blatant hypocrisy of it all.

Also, the misuse of tags is a huge pet peeve of mine. This isn't limited to the Otome tag, but also the yuri, yaoi, and bara tags, among others. Examples:

Bara: MxM only, male target demographic.

Otome: FxM only, female target demographic.

People will slap multiple tags (otome, yuri, yaoi) on something when none of them apply because they just smushed everything in, and a more general tag would make sense.

I could go on, but I'll spare you my ranting. >_>

Not only do they act like having female only protag is bigoted they also act like having only male LIs and or only female LIs is bigoted

Not everyone is bisexual, people

There are now games being tagged with Yuri when it has male lis, games being tagged Yaoi when it has female lis

If the goal is to be less bigoted isn't it more bigoted that lesbians now have to share a space with men? Are people so adverse to calling their game simply Amare or bisexual?

Why is it always women that have to share?

Oh girl, been asking myself that for years. Some people can't seem to accept that having separate genres is ok, and you don't have to smush everything togetherby trying to include everyone you just make nearly everyone else throw their hands up in frustration. It's a case of extreme over-correction that's been happening the last 15 years or so. Again, it's fine to have FxM only, FxF only, MxM only content be their own things; trying to appeal to everyone results in watered-down content, and, lets be real... women and men like different things and go about things differently. Yuri made by men for men (which is still the majority, statistically) is quite different from content made by women, for women... but try pointing out anything I've said, and you're immediately labeled a bigot. Yeah, no, I'm too old for that gaslighting nonsense.

Hii thanks for your comment! I totally get where you're coming from.

The Wolf Wears Red was originally written with a female protagonist in mind. I added options since I wanted more people to enjoy the game, but it still contains special dialogue for each gender (since the killer in the story prefers to target men).

About the otome label: The tag was required when submitting to otome jam, but I get why that would seem like it's cluttering the search -- it has now been removed.

I played a lot of otome games growing up, so I completely understand your frustration!

Thank you for being understanding of why women (especially lesbians) might want to protect their space. Wish more devs would follow your example instead of labelling their Yuri and BL otome.

I will always maintain my stance that people don't need to feel obligated to make things for everyone, but I appreciate the reasonable response, even if we disagree. Usually, I just get called a bigot, or whatever other rot.

You want to push ppl out of a space bcs you think picking pronouns at the start makes writer change the whole story so it doesn't fit a female audience any more. Horseshoe Incel-Gamer behaviour fits you.

(+1)

Why do you want to include men so bad?

? It lit does though, since the author then tries to shoehorn in something that was never there to begin with, and it shows through in the awkward writing. Also, Incel? Tell me you don't know what the words you use mean, without telling me you don't know what they mean. I'm a woman, and wanting to keep spaces that were originally for women FOR WOMEN means I hate women and objectify, or denigrate women? ...What? Horseshoe nothing, sweetie. Regurgitating words and terms you clearly don't understand just because you heard them somewhere and thought they sounded smart doesn't actually make you smart, you know.

Female player here and i love my Otomes but recent games have me saying the same thing😭

I stand with you😭

Was the label removed? I don't see it

(+3)

Yes, the tag has been removed. I will be submitting it to a different jam instead of otome jam!

(+1)(-2)

Meh I don’t see why you needed to remove it from the game jam when more than half those games have pronoun selection, but it’s still a step in the right direction
