this is so damn frustrating and im so tired of these sites relying on inconsistent ass ai moderation -_- i understand itch is a smaller staff and they dont have a ton of resources but ive always found their search subpar and in need of improvement tbh... and this only makes things more difficult for everyone. i keep "sensitive" content OFF by default not because im against nsfw content at all, i play eroge frequently in fact! but because theres SO MUCH and a lot of it isn't interesting to me at all and its so hard to filter for anything on this site that it's easier to knock out the entire category and only turn it on when im specifically interested in eroge...

what i find silly is knowing my own game never got deindexed despite it having a lot of similar warnings particularly for body horror and graphic violence? if it's simply a matter of slightly different wording (or different time or the planets align the wrong way... i dont know how the bots work lmao...) then it's just ridiculous and only goes to show how ineffective using an AI moderation is, at least on it's own. these things should always be looked over by a human to verify, at the very least they could have looked at the actual text to see that the warnings are for the blood/gore/body horror. if you did a proper rating test (like for google play) it would absolitely wouldn't get higher than M rating. this site is FULL of horror games and like half the games here should be slapped under the adult content label and treated as R18 in that case >.<

Unfortunately, it was looked at by a human, because I had some of my CWs thrown back in my face (ones for "sexual violence," "unwanted sexual advances," "disturbing content," etc) and was told to explain myself 🥴 This is what led to me being called a weirdo and a freak on Reddit lol

But even after I appealed that no actual SA takes place in the game (it's more a threat but nothing happens in the end because it's stopped) and that the unwanted sexual advances was referring to things like the MC being kissed sensually and getting uncomfortable because he's asexual so he eventually pulls away, it didn't matter and I was ignored. It didn't matter that there's no actual nudity or sexual content in the game -- because of these CWs it must be NSFW.

I think that a lot of the flagging must come down to specific wording: I see other games with CWs like "unwanted advances" and "dubcon" that don't get flagged for instance. Though for some reason straight up labeling your game 18+ doesn't get flagged LOL Some devs also put their CWs only in an external link or in an image, which keeps it from getting flagged.

It's just really frustrating all around and starts to make it feel really targeted 😅 And likely nothing is going to change about how it works, you just have to be careful and hope you don't get flagged for the way you worded something.

And yes I agree -- there's certainly nothing in OW worse than what's in The Letter for instance, which is an ESRB rated M VN:

And it definitely definitely is no worse than M-rated AAA games like Baldur's Gate, GTA V, The Witcher, etc that have straight up nudity and sex LOL 🤣

Bah.

thats so dumb and weird and is like.. the response to that is the exact kinda thing i feel makes a lot of ppl feel really reluctant to properly warn?? like its counterproductive 😭 Like I was SUPER hesitant to tell anyone any specifics about Alex's intrusive thoughts at first (And I still am really cautious about talking about it on my bigger accounts because of how weird people get about sexual themes...) bc I got paranoid that people would flip out and think I'm nasty for writing him having sexually violent intrusive thoughts u_u even though I felt like it made his arc way stronger and his plot wouldn't make sense if i avoided sexuality at all.

I think it's a lot of wording issues too yeah. I actually still need to add those to my CWs too (and I actually do have a warning for artistic nudity lmao...) but I always had a short summary and the full scope outside the site since I wanted to have extra detailed ones to keep people safe. and now that theres all these nsfw/adult content bans I avoided putting "adult" sounding terms on my pages too. I remember actively grimacing at the idea of adding any of the sexual/suggestive content warnings into the main store pages in case it was taken as "theres full on graphic undeniable sex scenes" instead of "sad catholic guilt and also an old lady is nude at some point for symbolism purposes" 😭
