Hybrid decker/print zine template and jam! Sticky

Making e-zines in Decker is great! And making print zines is great too! But what if you could make a zine that's both?

I've made a template that you can use to make an 8-page zine that's readable in Decker and will export to a printable format in the traditional single sheet 8 page fold format at the click of a button. There's a few options to adjust the margins, since printers are messy and America has funny page sizes, but hopefully the defaults should work for most people.

Since I want to encourage people to make their own zines with this template, I'm running a jam as well! It starts in a few days and it's like 6 weeks long so there's plenty of time if you want to make something for it!

Let me know what you think!

Hell yes!!! Thank you for bringing Decker into the physical world, let a thousand ditherzines bloom

Quick bugfix, PDF exports should keep custom palettes now!

Sorry if you'd already started, but replacing the code in the "save pdf" button should sort it for you if you don't want to start from scratch!

I've wanted something like this for Decker since I discovered it! Thanks for making this! Here's a pretty basic example of a zine made using this program.

This is really cool, great work.

I just wanna tell you guys that I was really confused when I saw this game jam because I speak Hebrew and my browser automatically translate stuff to Hebrew.
Zine in Hebrew translates to זין which means the male part and I was so confused when it said "we all love making -male part- " LIKE WHAT

To make it even worse, decker translates to דקר which means stabbed.
Now imagine "Hybrid stabbed male private part jam"
I WAS SO FREAKING CONFUSED, just letting you guys know cause it was so funny I had to show all my friends. Nothing wrong with your game jam btw, it's really cool.

I think your browser's autotranslation may be not very good.

Yeah I think so too

Jam is open for submissions, and there's already a couple in (since getting a headstart is OK)

Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

I started working on a zine with Decker 1.64 installed and when I went to test the exports, the top row of pages were not flipped upside down as they should be, and trying to export a GIF in native Decker just crashed the program. Updating to Decker 1.65 fixed both problems. So... just a heads up to make sure Decker is updated so you don't end up with a broken HTML file.

Yes, Decker 1.65 added a "turn" function that I use to flip the top row of pages. In general it's a good idea to stay up to date.

Submitted mine to the jam, thank you for hosting!

Thanks for submitting!

I've written up a few tips about using this template, since I think some stuff is a bit non-obvious (like the funny resolution) and it's caused some confusion and questions. https://micpp.itch.io/hybrid-zine-template-for-decker/devlog/1488285/a-few-tips-...

Jam's going well, and plenty of time to still make something if you want to!

One common pitfall is you really do need to upgrade to Decker 1.65. I've seen a couple of cases where people have started work in an older version, and aside from some of the print functionality being a bit borked it seems to break some of the modules and contraptions, so even if they do update there'll still be a few things that have gone funny. So it's a good idea to update before starting any work.

Maybe add a warning to the template? I think Decker exposes a version number.

Yeah, you're not the first to suggest this. I'll see what I can do

Yeah the template has a popup now if you're not on 1.65 or greater
