Not at all - the cases do not need to match. Real life serial killer just means you need to choose an actual serial killer and can create a completly fictional plot.
It just needs to feel real and plausible. Hope that helps! :D

And sorry for the misunderstanding with the theme, I was just a bit shocked when it announced. I think it's totally fine, the theme is pretty good.
