I think I see what's happening, whenever I place a font png without the background the space doesn't seem to work but when I do have a background it does work. I don't know why my font would need a background to function though?

edit: scale, I think is the term, the space character won't work without a scale.

Would need your font PNG+JSON to tell you more, but note that there’s a checkbox for specifying what counts for filled pixels. If your space has pixels right in the top-left corner, you may deceive the “auto” option.
