Did you combine every single item with other items?

Your wife has a huge point that it should be only mouse-clicks when the game is a point and click adventure game :) I'll reprogram after the voting periode, so that it will be only mouse-clicks.

It is still not version 1.0, so I need feedback on things that work and how they can be improved. I didn't fix the end part, so don't think of it.

I tried again with right-clicking on items and then on everything else I could think to try. I eventually tried even clicking on the person, and other random things, even though there was no indication you could interact with them. On this play I did not try to do as much left clicking since you mentioned combining things and I thought I had done enough left clicking before and had nothing happen, and it looks like I must have missed clicking on things in the right order to trigger other items to appear, that then needed to be combined. There was no guidance on what to do, and as someone who doesn't generally play point and click games, I was lost. After I tried again I handed it off to my wife. She did manage to figure it out, and she'll write a reply with her thoughts.

I can't give you feedback as a point and click player, but as someone who is at least little familiar with them and general game dev, I'll try to offer the advice I can. This needs a lot of work. There needs to be some clue as to what to do, beyond just keep clicking on everything until something happens. There wasn't any indication you could right click on the person to use items on them. The UI in general needs to be improved to be more consistent and clear. After picking up an item with right click, right clicking in some places brings up dialog and keeps the item in your hand, sometimes you get dialog and the item disappears, sometimes it just disappears, sometimes it exchanges items. I'd start with a focus on giving players direction on what to do, and progress from there.

Also, I'd recommend doing a web build for any future jams. You will get a lot more plays and feedback from a browser playable version than download only. We only play download games, especially Windows only, in response to someone who rates and comments on our game, but we try to play, rate, and comment on as many browser games as we can. In discussions I've seen a lot of others similarly comment that browser games are all they play. I don't know GameMaker, so don't know how difficult it is to do a web export, but if you are going to do more jams, then it is almost certainly worth learning how to do it.

There is no order of triggering things, as the main objective is to left-click and right-click (combine) on at least 4 different items each. The goal is that the player learns more about the situation through minimum count of clicking.

I'll add some tutorial on the UI and the hints and objective in that room.

I discovered also that I need digital certificate signature on .exe to avoid anti-virus error messages.

As my husband commented, the first thing that really stands out to me is calling it a point and click game, but requiring both keyboard and mouse. Having keyboard as an additional option is okay, but you should be able to play a point and click game with just the mouse. The keyboard keys weren’t very intuitive either. While using space made sense, I wouldn’t have thought to use E without being told to.

It was good that you had text show up when you moused over something you could interact with, though I think it would have also been helpful if you had highlighted the object as well. The collision shapes didn’t always seem to match what it looked like it should have. For example, in some mouse positions, the text said ‘watermelon’ but the image and the dialog were the peanuts.

The game itself was also lacking any real direction. I clicked around, but it was very unclear what was and what wasn’t important. I still genuinely don’t know what I did to make the other two items appear. Combining items was awkward and clunky. Sometimes combining items would give you some dialog while you kept the item you first picked up, sometimes it would give you dialog and have you drop the item you picked up, sometimes it wouldn’t give you dialog and have you drop the item you picked up, and sometimes it wouldn’t give you dialog and would swap what item you were holding. Having dialog for each combination, even something as simple as “those things don’t go together”. would have been helpful.

My biggest recommendation would be to give more feedback to the player, and have that feedback be consistent. That will help the player feel like they are actually accomplishing things.

True, then I'll remove obligatory keyboard keys, and change them into optional. 

Yeah, hotbar is good to have to know name of things. I'll check the match between hotbar and dialogues.

Sorry, you are totally right about consistent feedback.
