how do I talk to the npcs and give them power?
how is ai used in this game?

(+1)

Npcs will come up and talk to you, asking for power. You can give them power with the power staff (item slot 2) from your own supply gathered by killing enemies.

Every time a villager dies at night, a council scene will commence, where the AI villagers will discuss their grievances, praise, etc., depending on what you did as a leader and how much power you disrtributed. The villager factions eventually decide one by one if they will rebel or not.

the web version I am playing, there is no hint I can press 2 to switch items, maybe make it a bit more obvious?

Yeah this game is a really early prototype and I plan to make it a very polished and enjoyable indie game for the next jam. I really think this idea can do really well, I just didn't have time to package it properly as the scope was too large for just a couple weeks.

I would give 10 for creativity, but yeah need a bit more polish

In your judging would you still consider a game that has lots of potential with the idea but requires more time and effort to be done right because of the scope?

I worked a lot on the combat side (a bit too much) to make it fun so the social system / AI part was kind of last-minute. However if this game does well in this jam and people like the idea I will definitely push to make it a product that people will actually want to play, combining the juicy combat with AI-powered villagers that you actually talk with and have interconnected relationships etc. I'll probably make a whole narrative too...all of this for the next jam and some motivation from this jam would help a lot!

Yes, all dimensions will be considered, ai integration, gameplay & stability are definitely two dimensions

But also, creativity + visual design are other dimensions as well

In the end, it is the combined score of all judges + player metrics, so I am just asking for myself.
