I like the idea and the fact that you can see the player's previous steps when you rewind. I am a bit confused on how the shifts work.

In each level, there is a fixed pattern of some of the following physics shifts:
- upside down: gravity and player are vertically flipped
- half gravity: player can jump twice as high and falls down twice as slow
- upside down + half gravity: combination of the other two
- normal: no changes in physics
You always see what the next shift will be, and incorporate that into you decision on then and where to place a clone.
