It's literally the opposite of liberal ideologies. They have been suppressing things for years now, mostly targeting Japanese websites and games from dlsite, fantia, pixiv, etc. Them going after itch and steam under the mask of collective shout is nothing more than what it is, a mask. The only people responsible are the payment processors.
Payment processors like MC/Visa go back and forth with supporting and denying payments with NSFW content (whereas eg Paypal rightout bans it). It depends on how they're informed about the platforms they're used in, like now how CS made them now aware of steam and itchio.
It is ridicilous to even think that Visa/MC are putting up this type of theather of CS being their "masked front", when before this they didn't have problems with processing NSFW games on steam/itchio. This is further evident by them being okay with accepting payments from Pornhub until they got sued about supporting the site. They don't have to do this "scooby doo CS masked front" masquerade when they allow all kinds of sources of money until they get in trouble with the law. They stop when they are bothered by law.
With this recent Visa/MC ban with NSFW games, the perpetrator is CS. Visa/MC didn't have problems with accepting payments with NSFW content (edit meaning nsfw games on steam/itchio) before CS started to pressure them. You think the billionaire elite would turn down money unless by law they have to? Everything happens in the dark before it's put into the spotlight.
I will admit I generalized my comment's beginning with the "global porn ban", my mistake. I should've said "recent porn ban with games", since it is true they've always been at odds with NSFW content.
If we are to generalize though, it is true that conservative, religious and bourgeoisie elite are the ones to blame, since they are who either control and/or manipulate each other.

I run in a lot of farther left circles and EVERYONE there is condemning this, this is a conservative thing; the far-right organization Collective Shout lobbied for this and that was the main reason it happened, there were no "woke people" involved. I'm not an expert in the kinds of sh*t. They ARE woke people. Just different sub-group. "Left circles" are "condemning this" only because LGBTEAFWX++ was mentioned. Also "everyone" in "left circles" doesn't even mean anything - because people there are not allowed to have different opinions (I've been there). "Left circles" are absolutely happy to ban everything they don't like. The core of left ideology is to have censorship and government control over everything. It's exactly like liberal ideologies - censorship, feminism, attacking freedom, getting offended, canceling stuff they don't like, give the government control over everything, moral policing, etc. Little details like "ban everything that is gay" vs "ban everything that is not gay" don't make a difference. Collective Shout is an ally of National Center on Sexual Exploitation which previously went by the name Morality in Media. They're a right-wing, hyper-conservative, Christian fundamentalist group that, much like Collective Shout and Exodus Cry, occasionally uses "woke" ideas to achieve their goals of censorship and thought policing. Collective Shout wears progressivism like a cloak but it's the polar opposite of that. This is literally the opposite of what the left does. This has been their agenda for decades. As much as I don't care for a lot of leftist bullshit, let's put the blame where it actually belongs: the credit companies want to control what you can buy to begin with and pressure from groups like Collective Shout, Exodus Cry, and Morality In Media give them an excuse. The only counter is to apply more pressure to them from the opposite angle. This has happened before and has been happening for a long while. Instead of bitching about whatever "wokeys" are, contact the credit companies and complain. If you're in the USA, where most of these companies are headquartered, add that you'll file a formal complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau... and then actually do so. If they get enough formal complaints, they'll go after the companies.
