Your goal is to defeat as many slimes as possible. Hitting them with your dash (E or shift keys) will damage the slimes. If you haven't already, I recommend playing the tutorial, as it explains everything from controls to gameplay mechanics :)
You said "balance the scales," before, so that's what I did.
