Thanks for weighing in here - and for adding support for 3D objects in the first place! I actually put together a GDevelop game making use of them (and the new 3D physics) since posting this. Still very happy with Asset Forge as a handy way to produce these assets: it’s quick to put together something that looks pretty good, and with a bit more effort (and the right layer effects in GDevelop) it’s not too much harder to make it really pop.
