For what's worth it, I'm on a Dell Inspiron and it works just fine (even tanked a pretty serious hit), so at least it isn't *every* Dell laptop… though I've heard of other issues with XPS before. Something is up with that division :/
If you're lucky you may be able to take out the XPS' drive and try to extract the files from it (drives rarely die unless they're very old), no idea if it's worth the effort for you.
Depending on how savvy you feel, you could try popping open another PC (if you have one that the hard drive would fit in) and switching the drives temporarily (just to move the data off).
Sik is right though -- hard drives Do die, but it's rare. You should be able to recover your data pretty easily.
