Description
Inspired by Turn of the Friendly Card but an Alice In Wonderland era hunt with the Queen of Hearts hunting the heraldic Camelopard. I considered off this basis to sing some kind of Weird Al type lyrics which would have matched out the vowels but i chickend out due to just not enough time to make that really stellar in all regards. Borrows the rhythm cadence though!

This piece does a really nice job telling a story. I love the back and forth between the more confident sections and the more reserved and tip-toeing sections. The section at 0:44 and each of the repeats is my favorite part! The way the melody plucks over the pizzicato bass is so pleasing. You have a few other sections that have a similar feel and offer slight variation which I think is very smart and similarly excite me!

Constructive feedback: I am wondering if maybe I have a lack of knowledge of the reference material, but I have a hard time connecting this piece with the theme. I recognize that not all gambling happens in casinos, but I also try to rate correlation to theme based on if I could reasonably pick out the given theme if I didn’t know it just by listening to the song. You have such a nice story-telling arc to this piece, but I’m curious what your interpretation of the connection to the theme is?

Overall, I really enjoyed this track and I think that your counterpoint and voice-leading guiding the trajectory of the harmony is particularly well-made. Great work and thank you for sharing!

Theme response:

It's jumping the shark a little because it's a deliberate variation of an Alan Parsons piece which is -about- gambling but brings a little Lewis Carroll into it by matching similar sounding words turn of a friendly card -> camelopard as if someone were doing a Weird Al Yankovic of it.

Glad you gave it a shot though!

Cheers

you have to remember the Alan Parsons original A Turn Of A Friendly Card (in 2 parts) is about Vegas gambling addiction and they were kind of leaning toward getting more Christian about that time so some moral messaging in their songs, was more prominent very close to the end of their more famous work around '85 with Ammonia Avenue

Sounds like you’ve met some sort of a medieval trickster, a lot of swings, some ambiguity, yeah, very nice

Developer

Glad you gave it a go!  the original by Alan Parsons carries a little of this medievality into it so i decided to stay in the general zip code.

Cheers!
