Hello MaplePoki and GipMedia,

I made a few changes to the game that I noticed you guys mentioned. So I tried to reduce the file size as much as I could, made the Death boss a bit less OP, added some signs in the Realm of Darkness, the Swarm's Nest, the Demonic Caverns, and the Swamp that show you a map (with a tutorial message telling you about it of course). Then I took all the Vendors and completely changed the Crossroads area into a small civilization, putting the shop vendors there and a couple of extra NPCs, too. You can now also sprint/dash in all the maps except the starting area and ending hall. The random encounter rate has been decreased a bit, and the town area also has an HP and MP restoration crystal, so it's like a safe spot the player can return to. There are no random encounters in the town, so don't worry. I'm sorry if there were other things I couldn't get to. I tried my best. Thank you both so much for taking the time out of your schedule to play my game and rate it (I played and rated your games too, love them!).     :)                       Thanks again!

So I was playing this game, thinking, "oh, it's a jam RPG. This'll be quick." Then it was waaay longer than I thought it would be - major props and congratulations for making such a long game in this time, especially being that it's your first (or so I see from MaplePoki's comment)! There are definitely some map gripes and design gripes, but everything worked, and it was enjoyable for the most part! I think for the map issue, what would help is some landmarking - just some memorable statues or areas that allow for the player to hold their bearings and know where they have to go next. Enemy variety would be nice, as well as some more unique designs, but hey, they serve their purpose here. This might be the most minor critique that I've ever had of a game, but I noticed that the rocks that are occasionally on the ground (the brighter white ones), when under a shadow, aren't shaded, they just stay the same, causing a little bit of visual confusion. The game wasn't all too unique, but it was certainly a good time for what it was, and for a first game it was unbelievable! Great job!

Thank you so much GipMedia! Yes, this is my first game. I am still trying to find out how to make RPG Maker affect the rock tilesets with the lighting, because for some reason it just doesn't seem to do so. Maybe I'll have to copy the tileset and make a shadowed one? I will be trying to improve it and update it as fast as I can through school work! Thank you for your review! :)

Since this is your first game, and you want me to be honest, I'll try not to hold back-

Okay, so I just entered the Swarm's nest at 00:42:03, and I stopped playing.. I could not really see the game to the end because I'm already annoyed enough by the VAST amount of random encounters :( I already fleed from most battles from the castle until now.. and I find the game quite challenging, and I spent almost an entire hour and I haven't even finished the game :(

But hey, this is your first game, there's a first for everything. :) I love RPGs, and you made this game in RPGMaker, and okay your coding, story, and everything was not that bad! I did not really encounter any bugs whatsoever. The art and audio is appealing enough! (idk if they were rpgmaker assets though? but either way appeal is important so people know how fleshed out your game is :) )

The only quarrel I have is with the level design. From beginning until where I ended (the Swarm's nest), I found the level design stressful and quite difficult to navigate. Even in the town outside the castle there were random encounters? I found most of the navigation really hectic because of the amount of random encounters.. I don't know if I'm just unlucky or that the encounter rate is just really high.. I just kept going because I assumed it would be short but apparently not. So i gave up during Swarm's nest. I'm not sure if the game is just really long or the navigation from area to area is just like a really complex labyrinth.

So in line with this, I just recommend you make the level design clear to the player, or easy to navigate! Perhaps even decrease the level of difficulty of not just the bosses, but the encounter rate!I hope I don't come across as too critical.. but I really like the RPG element of your game! It's just that I find the level design really hectic.. Congratulations on your first game though :)

extra notes:

Okay so I haven't used RPGMaker that much but, is the file size really supposed to be that big? I have slow connection from where I am and so I really waited to play this game ><

Audio feels too loud!!! i reduced my volume significantly, and I hope you add an option to control it!

There was a save file already when I opened the game? I did not tamper with it and just made my own save file

the death boss is too OP! I consumed 7 potions in a row after being death sweeped to 200-300 everytime I am back to full health!

if only i knew LShift makes you walk faster, I would've used it since the start .-.

also I just realized, I've reached so far and always collected coins but, where do I use them?

Hello, MaplePoki!

Thank you so much for your feedback on my game. It was very helpful how you went into detail with the maps in the game and told me how to improve them. I will surely turn down the rate of random encounters for this game in an upcoming update. As for the navigation, I could add a map system or something (Would that be helpful, or should I just make the levels more straightforward than mazes?) . Yes the assets used in this game were RPG Maker assets, as I'm not really much of an artist when it comes to pixel-art. I will decrease the difficulty of the bosses, and I will certainly make a shop intro somewhere. I had put in a shop and a trainer (In the Demonic Caverns and The Swarm's Nest), but I guess they aren't really that noticeable. And about the Lshift to dash, I will put the tutorial for that maybe at the forest since I went back and realized how long and drawn out I made that map. I'll try to control the audio for sure (This was my first time using RPG Maker so I'm still kinda new to the mechanics.). I went back into the files and realized that the save file was the file I used when testing! So that HAS to be fixed ASAP. And the file size? I'm still trying to fix it. I googled how to get RPG Maker VX Ace to export the game as just a .exe, but all I got were things for RPG Maker MV, which I didn't own. I tried to figure it out myself, but I'll try to fix it the best I can. MaplePoki, your review was not too critical....in fact, everything you said I will not take negatively at all, since these are the ways you think the game can be improved and made more fun. Your review was extremely helpful. Thank you!   :)

I agree about adding a map, but I believe the mazes should be more straightforward! They feel a bit too long to navigate sometimes, and it stresses me out so I make like 15 saves each maze haha! In terms of RPG elements though, if you want to make it a larger game, you should give the player certain areas where they feel safe, or would like to return to!- unless the game is just a dungeon crawler in its entirety!

I forgot to mention- would it be possible to increase resolution? I tried fullscreening or looking for options to increase resolution but I had no luck><

Again props to your first attempt at a game jam!

Thanks so much! Yeah, I should probably add a little town that's kind of like a hub for the player and has all the shops in it... Kind of like Hollow Knight or Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I am working on increasing resolution, but I haven't found anything yet. Maybe even turn it into a sort of RPG-Metroidvania hybrid where all the areas interconnect and lead back to a town.

Also, MaplePoki? I don't know how fast I might be able to update the game though, since my school has been sending me a lot of online homework since the lockdown. And school always comes before these things...so, yeah. I am already updating the file to not have the saves in them. I am so sorry you could not see the end of my game though, so I will try to update as fast as I can through all the school work.

It's okay! You should take your time :) School takes priority!
