Many oofs were had... poor Alice especially that one record scratch ending oh my god
An interesting take on a romance plot in that sometimes, its okay to realize it shouldn't be. Although it felt somewhat out of character at times for the correct Seija option to be so 'nice', I really liked how many unique endings and character struggles were explored through her. Lovely character portraits too!
It's kind of surprising that we haven't had that many branching Visual Novels, but this one is great.
As the author of Dance of the Inverted Heart, I was very surprised to see a game with a part of the title, but you definitely have my approval. Seija's written magnificently, and having her be the outsider interacting with different characters lends to a nice "advice" setup that feels different than others I've played. Fantastic job all around.
This game is an intriguing little romp, with all endings taking about 20-30 minutes or so.
The presentation and writing very much reminded me of games from the "Umineko" series; I'm unsure of if it was an intentional homage or not, but I really liked how it looked on-screen and felt to read; it's immediately engaging and very different from the usual VN fare we tend to get. Raiko's appearances were also an interesting choice for a VN; it's yet another aspect which adds spice and variety to the game
I also appreciate the family aspect of the great tool chase arc; I feel that is a severely underexplored dynamic in Touhou Jam games in general, and this game did a good job of trying to show off how some of these dynamics worked in a way which made sense.
The true ending is perhaps one of the boldest and most daring I've seen in a visual novel in some time. It takes unbelievable moxie to make something like that work, and the degree of difficulty is exceptional. You pulled it off, and I have to tip my cap towards it. (Though, I admit a little surprise, as I didn't get the impression from the prior stories that Seija's relationship with Shinyomaru quite went like that.)
(A small, but not game-shattering critique: art/music was a mixed bag. Aqwa's portraits were outstanding, and the Touhou remixes were also very good, but some of the background art and "cooldown" music were ill-fitting to the point of distraction. I cannot help but wonder if more appropriate backgrounds would have enhanced the experience just a little more.)
Overall, I found it to be a very unique game which took some intriguing choices and ran with them. This game knew what it wanted to say and was not afraid to say it. Even relatively mundane decisions could put you somewhere unexpected, and that's not something every story can say. Great job to everyone who participated in this project!
I'm not too familiar with how these characters are typically portrayed, both within canon and the fanon, but everyone here solidifies themselves as their own unique character. Raiko's afterschool lessons are a nice touch - it maybe even made myself feel responsible for Seija's behavior so now I'm invested even more than originally planned.
Pretty nice exploration of what could have happened right after Impossible Spell Card.
Seija's always been one of the most interesting Touhou characters to me. She's been created purely antagonistic and unfriendly, yet that doesn't keep fans from writing her being a "good influence" at times while keeping her (rather) true to her character.
So to me, it's so great to see how Seija interacts with people in this game. She's her usual rebellious but kinda-inspiring self, and that's a really great contrast against the two weaker-willed girls on this game's routes. In the end they're all people, with their own personal problems, trying to find their way. And I find this game's message beautiful.
Pretty great writing, and all the illustrations and arranges, that was done within the allocated 2 weeks? This is seriously impressive!
This was a fun read. The writing was pretty good, and I loved the humor. I’ll be honest, I’ve read a few Seija fics by now and personally I’ve kind of had had enough of the beaten and eternally difficult Seija, but I liked how she had moments to shine and redeem herself here, in her own unique way. The other characters were well developed too. The true ending **SPOILERS** was a bold move and not usually the kind we get, but hey, sometimes things turn out that way, and it was very strong emotionally speaking.
I really enjoyed the music. DDC has the best intro theme. The CGs and portraits were great. Neat use of sound effects.
It took me until I read the README to realize the Tsukihime inspiration (besides the Raiko school parts, which gave me Fate vibes). Nice job.
