For a long time now, I’ve wished that ZUN would add a 2-player option to the Touhou games, like most arcade shmups already do. Nice work.

You made... co-op touhou? With online multiplayer??

Glad I got to grab someone and play this, very cool idea that I'm surprised I haven't seen before! Difficulty felt just right in that normal mode was just enough to end our run during the last boss fight

Played the game with a friend who doesn't play Touhou. It was pretty cool teaching them some of the strats live and eventually beating the game with them. I'm surprised the idea of Co-Op Bullet Hell hasn't been done more; it worked really well. I especially liked bombing when it seemed like my friend was cornered.

One of the coolest ideas in the jam, and I'm impressed at how well the network play worked. I didn't have any issues with lag, lost connections, or the other jank that plagued my attempts to play Touhou 19 netplay.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward; it plays like a stage of the regular Touhou games, except co-op. Having lives shared between the players is a decision I'm not sure about, as if there are skill differences between the players, it could make going for a clear kind of annoying. The difficulty is also pretty low, I was able to get through Standard on my first try. Yumeko feels a lot harder than Shinki, even. There is a lower difficulty as well, and a good idea for an update would be to add a Hard or Lunatic difficulty.

Visually the game is fine, except for one major issue. Certain bullets appear *below* the player sprites. I noticed this in particular with the ellipse-shaped bullets on Yumeko. This can make doing tight dodges with these bullets very difficult. An easy fix is to just make sure all bullets are always rendered on top of player sprites.

The audio is very good. An energetic dubstep-type song plays throughout the game, which is good for getting you pumped up and keeping you going. I would have liked grazing sounds; the only indication of a graze is a little 20 that pops up by bullets when you graze them.

The story is practically non-existent. Mai and Shinki go through Makai and shoot up a bunch of fairies, then take on Yumeko and Shinki. I think a little intro cutscene (it could play before connecting, and be skipped) would have gone a long way to making me more invested in what's going on. It would also be a chance to improve the visuals of the game, by having more character art, and also incorporating the LGBT themes better.

The LGBT themes are also very light. Mai and Yuki work together as a team, but there's not really anything that hints at their relationship. They could be lovers, friends, or just temporary allies and the game would still work the same way.

Overall, this was a really cool idea that worked surprisingly well, but felt a little rushed. With some polish it would become something I'd want to try playing with other people I know who are into Touhou gameplay.

Super awesome idea, I really enjoyed it! There was a bit of difficulty at first because player 1 and 2 have different views. Apparently where I could see the menus, P2 can't, so I just had to verbally communicate switching players/starting the game. It might be good if possible to make it a vote mechanic with both players clicking "Ready" to start, or "Switch" to switch? The game said "You died" to player 2 and "Game clear!" for P1, and it sort of locks you out after you get to the ending screen, so a "retry" button might be good.

I also think it'd be nice to either do separate lives or maybe a "Follow the leader" mechanic, where the follower's lives don't matter but the leader's do. Would make it a fun opportunity to learn patterns without making the other player beef it because you're bad (ME, IM BAD LOL)

The music was super jammin and I loved the art! A multiplayer entry must've been a real challenge to make and it was super easy to connect and play, so thank you!

(Special thanks to Rosy, who played this with me today!)

Thank you for playing our game, Im glad you liked it! Regarding the player 2 game over, player 1 clear, can you go into more detail on what happened when that occured? Id like to be able to fix this when we get around to a post jam update and being able to replicate that bug and then test a fix would be quite helpful. Usually player death is only supposed to be finalizeable by player 1 but sounds like that isnt happening here, weird ass bug :pensive:

(1 edit)

Got to check this out with Theo, so thanks to them I got to try this in its full glory. Really really love the idea of a cooperative schmup, and the execution here was excellent!

The only improvement I think is warranted would be having each player's life/bomb count as separate. I think doing so would spare players from being punished in the event that their partner suffers lag or just makes a mistake, and also could lead to some fun clutch scenarios where one friend has to go it alone while the other eggs them on. And of course, being a cooperative experience, it's nicer to not get mad at eachother :)

This was fun! Streamed it with Lily and had a good time doing it! My only issue was the lack of prediction in the input handling from the networked player; P2 seemed to stutter step around a bit, which led to a (very) small amount of confusion. But it was fun, and it seemed to be well-tuned, difficulty-wise, for its length. And I appreciated that I recognized some of the spells used by Shinki at the end from my time playing the PC-98 games c:

Pretty solid co-op SHmUP! Great job for pulling this off within 2 weeks!

So I played it with a friend, and we both agree. Good balance, no problem, all fun! We often split during the stages to take care of each side.
I think the art's quite good, especially Mai and Yuki's portraits - and unexpectedly good animations for the player sprites and the boss sprites. The stage BGM is a banger too!
My friend's brings up that the player shots could be more distinct from eachother, but the game's still quite enjoyable.

I recorded the game for those who may not be able to play the game right now, whatever the reason.
