Although I'm not entirerly clear on what's happening, the commentary of grief, particularly the denial stage with bits of anger, depression and acceptance sprinkled in is clear. I also get the feeling Viola may not have been the best person, but perhaps that was just the entity being possesive(pun intended) and manipulative. The spook factor and overall art is great, too, especially the sprites! So expressive! My only issue would be with voice acting. The lines just feel a little, bland? But also unnecesarily sly and menacing, near every single one of Viola's lines feels like it has exactly the same "evil" intonation and it gets old pretty quick. But that's not the main issue, the main issue was with audio processing. Some lines would randomly cut off without warning, in a way that was clearly not intentional(ie not partial voice acting). And for some of the branching paths dialogue from previous ones would play while text displayed route-appropriate. Probably bugs but still
From the outset, this game had me asking ‘what the hell is happening?’, in not a confused way, but in a genuinely scared, intrigued way.
Gaslighting always gives a stomach churning feeling of unreality and you’ve captured that wonderfully. I found my thoughts spinning multiple plates as I try to dissect the situation being presented, which is always good when you’re dealing with a mystery.
The emotions felt very real and vulnerable, from Tiana's lack of self-care, the way others seem to not quite understand, to the confused panic that takes place when the main issue rears its head. Although we only spend a little time with each character there's a genuine sense of history and relationship with each.
It's unfortunate that the game is in an unfinished state, and I could genuinely feel that as I reached the ending (third choice) with little conclusion. Unresolved endings are fine, but too few loose ends were tied here (I understand it's due to the time constraint and the hurricane situation). I'm looking forward to a more complete and polished release, because I feel like you've got something really special here with a lot of potential!
Are you planning a desktop release at any stage? I'd like to go back through and revisit my choices sometime.
Great entry, loved the story and the expressiveness of the characters! I will definitely have to play this one again after the jam is over to get the other endings!
I also found a bug -- when I tried opening the settings after starting the game (not in the main menu) I couldn't close the settings no matter what. Luckily that was right at the start of the game so I didn't lose a lot of progress (edit: this happened in the browser version on chrome/windows)
Really great project!! You've definitely captured the feeling of a surreal, uncertain dream, and the writing really shines. The character art and expressions are charming, and really show off each character's personality, and the story is intriguing enough to go back and try a few endings. Well done & congrats!!
gave it 5 stars across the board because wow, this submission is incredible. in my opinion the screenshots on the game page dont do the art of this game justice, the expressions are so perfect for the mood they're portraying. i thought that kenji and viola had really evocative expressions. the only downside i could find is just that it didnt run super well on my pc, like UI elements wouldnt activate with the mouse for some reason? that might just be me though? once i was in the game i just used arrow keys to go forward/back and it was no problem. i loved the characterizations and the panic felt real and personal. i think you all nailed this one. i hope it gets more attention
Wow!! One of the writers for the project here and thank you so much for your kind words!!! This means so much since we all were ambitious with this project. We're also going to keep note of any bugs or weird things you noticed for a future update!!! Definitely sharing with the whole team! :D
