I am a huge fan of spooktober games and normally just lurk and play but I literally had to create an account to rate this game because it was INCREDIBLE.

I'm shook at how much there is to this game?? The art and characters are amazing, the color and vibes IMMACULATE, the story is such a cool mystery, and the music and performances were the cherry on top. I wish it was longer just so that there was more to the mystery and more time to hang out with the characters. I also wish there were more hang out scenes with everyone (like ophelia meeting the gang) and more voiced moments because they really brought scenes to life.

DLC WHEN?? haha jk jk...unless?? (TAKE MY MONEY!)

Ohmygosh scullie, we're honored you not only took the time to play TSUL but to make an account so you could leave us with your wonderful review! 😭💙 Thank you so so so much, it means a whole lot to our development team!

We are still actively pushing some updates, slowly but surely we hope to add CGs we wanted to create and perhaps some more voiced lines, who knows! Only time will tell.

Thank you again, and Happy Spooktober! 💙

What an absolutely lovely game! I always try to explore multiple routes before leaving a comment, and boy did it pay off for this one! All the paths (and endings!) that I've gone through feel lovely and well-written, which is incredibly impressive given the scope of the game.  The voice barks and lines here and there also felt great without being obtrusive, and all the actors did a really great job. The little nods to characters' mythoses, both in their lives and their character designs, felt well-thought-out and incredibly fun to discover, and the flow of the minigames within the story worked really well (and the option to skip past them when failed was appreciated)! The characters all felt lovable and had great depth, and so many of them touched my heart (especially Garret and Sanraya's routes!). I also loved the diversity of character designs, and how human everybody looked - knowing that beings who could look like *anything* would find beauty and meaning in looking like you and me felt really unexpectedly beautiful and affirming. It's such a treat to find a game about the cosmic and unknowable celebrating the beauty in the mundane.

The scope & completeness of this game as a work was wild to see - huge congrats for finishing this within the month!!!

Featherboy, thank you so so SO much for taking the time to explore all of what Cape Lockehurst has to offer! Your comment personally made me emotional and very, very happy. I know I can speak on behalf of our whole team for Molli's incredible work in bringing our story to life, but our whole team really gave it their all during the month of September to make TSUL the best that it can be. We're so grateful for your very kind review, and it is extremely heartwarming for all of us to hear. Thank you. Cheers, and Happy Spooktober!

I mean, everyone else has already covered everything I was going to say about how great the characters and visuals and monster design is, minigames, mechanics, etc etc etc, so instead I am just going to say "GARRET!!! <3 <3 <3" and hope that properly covers it.

Developer(+1)

Drone Garden Studios, thank you so much for playing TSUL and leaving us with your kind review, it really means so much to our dev team! And we're with ya. GARRETTTTTT 🐐💙💙💙

There is a very particular, special kind of oddness that permeates certain small seaside towns, and this is honestly the first time I think I've seen that represented so well! Absolutely adored this start to finish; the character and monster designs are both phenomenal, the story is strong, well-written, and intriguing, the music melodic and whimsical--and I practically shed tears of joy when I found I could skip the fishing mini-game, because for reasons unknown fishing mechanics are my perennial bane, hahaha.

(Additionally: I see that Pan's Labyrinth easter-egg! Or rather,  heard it! 💚)

My only--admittedly greedy--complaint is that after falling in love with all the cast of characters, I was left wanting more of the ensemble interactions at the end; though then again, I still wouldn't be ready to let them go. ✨ Such wonderful work, team--one of my favorites of the jam by far!

OH MY GOSH, I was wondering where I knew the tune that saya was humming from, thank you so much 😭
I was trying to remember all night and could not for the life of me remember

To the lovely team of BRS, thank you so much for giving TSUL  a chance and leaving behind your super sweet review, our dev team was so happy to read it and honored as well (we LOVE Tell It Slant). 💙

If you don't mind me asking, which build was downloaded? We recently pushed 1.4 which had the fishing minigame difficulty reduced but if it was 1.4... we still have some work to do. 🤣

And our VA Jonna-Lynn was SO happy to see someone has caught the reference! 🎶

Thank you again. This means the world to us! Happy Spooktober!

I finally got around to playing this game and I really adore the visuals, the character/monster design is incredibly and unique, and the majority of the sound design (at the beginning) and all of the music really cohesively blend well together to make an oddly comforting and unsettling vibe.

The mini games are great to give my zoomy brain a break, a good diversion from the story.

The pacing is also commendable too, allowing me to ease into the world and the premise.

My main criticism is with the voice over, which in a sense I'm pretty particular/picky with because it's my area of expertise.

The actors aren't mixed too evenly, which wasn't bad for the majority of the time but it did get distracting from time to time. I also think there could have been stronger acting choices to convey their character more.

But regardless, this is definitely a juggernaut of a project, and I can't wait to see more from this team! Great job everyone.

Developer(+1)

Hi EeeCee, thank you so so much for checking out TSUL and for leaving your thoughtful feedback! I will certainly be relaying your review to the team.

The VA audio mixing was a bit of a struggle for our audio team. For one, a huge majority of our team was completely new to visual novel game design. We didn't have the scope to offer live direction and so our VAs only had the script and story (they also submitted takes in the final week of the jam((something we would definitely not aim to replicate for future endeavors lol)), so we were all scrambling). Nonetheless, we came through with what we could have and I know our team is proud for the amount of polish we were able to achieve in such a short period of time!

Thank you again for checking us out, it really means a whole lot. Cheers, and Happy Spooktober!

Played the game and got all the love interests routes!
Really enjoyed my time and loved the overall atmosphere of the game.
FISHING IS HARD, but I managed to get two feesh :D
All in all for all routes it took me about 6 hours, really fun.
Good job everyone who worked on it!

Hehe, thank you MissKatonik again for streaming and playing TSUL, our dev team had so so so so SOOOO much fun playing along, and we were amazed for your dedication  to achieving all of our Love Interest routes- I am so glad I got to tune in towards the last few hours of stream! It was a blast :>

We'll be sure to check our your team's Spooktober VN, I know I am super excited to see your VA role at play! Eeee! Big congrats!

Cheers, and Happy Spooktober!

haha thanks! Really enjoyed all the characters so of course I wanna romance them all 🤭
Let us know what you think if you do play it!

Really was blown away by how polished this game was. I loved the atmosphere and how everything fit together to create a really immersive world. The art is gorgeous, the music is really a perfect to set the mood, and the mini games were a lot of fun (I felt very tense during the hiding games, great job!)

This is greedy based on the crazy amount of content, but I wish there were a few more "cutscene" moments and voiced lines. It really brought the characters to life when they spoke full sentences and I wish there were a few more instances of that. I also would have liked to see a cutscene image with all of our friends together!

It really reminded me of visual novels like Zero Escape except the cozy version. I think it would be a great game to play on console like that!

Developer

Hi chastaa, thank you so much for giving The Stars Under Lockehurst a play! I'll forward your kind review and feedback to our team!

Our art department also wished we had more CGs to show off for the panel submission BUT, we are in the talks of continuing polish and adding features that did not make it during the jam period! If we decide to, we'll certainly be posting it as a dev log, so be sure to keep an eye out! <3

Thank you once more, and have a very happy Spooktober!

I absolutely adored playing this!!! It was so polished and impressive, especially for something done in a month - a massive props to the entire team for this incredible undertaking!!!

The aesthetic of the game was fantastic, the art was such a delightful tone setter, and the music added some really nice ambience. The voice acting was also such a good touch, and really added an extra layer of delightfulness to the characters. And the MONSTER DESIGNS!! I was blown away by them, and really loved the incredible variety of creepy-beautiful critters in this game. Sanraya’s true form was definitely a highlight for me. I also really appreciated the little artistic details, like the fish animation in the loading screen and the decal around the text box!!

Also an honorable mention to Garret's little eye-stalk tears <3 I never thought I would see a crustacean monster cry!!

The story and characters were really lovely, I was really impressed by how much content you all were able to weave in, and how rich the story was even when working within a limited amount of time. The murder mystery aspect was really enjoyable, and I loved how the interactions with the romance-able cast were interspersed very nicely between the plot beats. I also was really struck by the dynamics between the eldritch horrors, the relationships they had with each other were such a nice touch and added some extra dimension of the world for me. I loved watching them banter and interact.

I ended up romancing Angélique for my first playthrough, and was so charmed by her. Honestly I was toast after the first "darling". I also really loved Mikel, and am planning to romance him in my next playthrough <3 I also have to mention our morally...questionable best friend. Ophelia was very compelling, I adore a mad scientist archetype sm.

I also adored the little very feesh-hungery critter...I love him...he's so cute.

There was clearly so much love and care put into every part of this, and it made the game such a treat to play through. Thank you all for the super fun game, and I hope you can get some rest this month after completing this amazing accomplishment!

Gosh I could practically cry tears of joy. This is the sweetest comment and our dev team will be over the moon to know we received such a thoughtful, kind, and heartwarmingly positive review. Thank you so much vanillaateaa, not just for playing TSUL, but for taking the time to leave your own experience of TSUL with us- It makes us happy that we're able to share our stories and impact others in meaningful ways. Cheers, and Happy Spooktober! 😭💙🐟☄️

Whoa. That length in a month? Very amazing!

The monster designs are so cool and the characters are distinct and fun.

Thank you for the skip minigame option; I'm terrible at it.

Developer(+1)

Hi Altila, thank you so much for taking the time to play TSUL, I'll send your feedback over to our team, especially regarding the minigame difficulty! We're glad the Skip option helped you to enjoy the story comfortably!

And yes, our Project Manager, Molli, was our solo, key word SOLO Writer for TSUL. We are also impressed for their sheer tenacity to write a story of great length, and with it came really lovely character dynamics and interactions that bring charm and life to our story- If it weren't for their hardwork and support of our whole team I wouldn't have been able to deliver on our character work. You can also send your kudos to our awesome Monster Artist Rex. :>

Thank you again! Happy Spooktober!

The art was so nice, and the overall vibe - even though I was solving a murder - was actually quite pleasant. I loved the little fish animation while everything was loading and the music. Tbh, I wish this crew of "monsters" could be my friends IRL.

I chose to romance Sanraya which undoubtedly was a great choice. She was so sweet and I 100 percent would visit the cosmos with her. Garret was also such a loveable character, he was the absolute best and I loved his goats.

The skill checks during important scenes was a nice touch and I actually liked this. The fishing minigame wasn't my favorite, however, the concept overall was super cool. This game really is well polished. I'm absolutely blown away by the level of effort and care that went into this game for a jam.

Developer(+2)

Ohmygosh, I will be forwarding your super kind comment to my team, they will be so so happy to read it 🥺❤️ Thank you so much for taking the time to play TSUL, Jax! I am also happy to hear your fondness of Sanraya and Garret 😊🫶 🧜🏻‍♀️✨️🐐

We're with you about the fishing minigame. Our team also finds it pretty brutal LOL. We're hoping to release some updated polish along with a reduction to difficulty for fishing minigame soon. Very happy to hear you enjoyed the others!

I'm looking forward to hearing your role in Death Love Repeat soon. I am SURE it will be a treat! Cheers!

Thank you so much for the kind response! Seriously, I cannot say it enough - WELL DONE!

I spent a very interesting evening in the company of lovely monsters. I love the artwork in this VN and the unobtrusive music nd voicing really adds to it. I admit that I am not a fan of Lovecraft, but Mikel... Maybe I will warm up to this topic)) Thank you very much for the wonderful game!

Developer(+1)

Hi Malia,

Thank you so much for taking the time to play TSUL! I am so happy you enjoyed our little lovely crew of mysterious monsters, haha! Hehe our team is also a bit fond of Mikel, we are with you there lol!

Thank you again for your feedback, cheers! Happy Spooktober! 🐟☄️

This game is soooo prettyyyyyyy!!
I love it. I really like the character interactions, and the sheer amount of writing, backgrounds, characters, minigames that are done for this is crazy! Atmospheric soundtrack, really capturing that sea vibe! Some of the voiceline recording/processing could have been a little better, but other than that I had a good time!

The UI Art is so stylized and pretty ;-;

The fish minigame is brutallll

(looove the designs of the horrors that may or may not be in the game)

Developer(+2)

Hi Senaeris, thank you so so so much for checking out TSUL!!! I will happily forward your feedback to our team! 🐟❤️

Our team actually had a LOT of trouble with our fishing minigame too LOL. Most of our team could only catch as much as 2 fish. So far I am the only one who can complete it with ease... 😭 We'll definitely consider a difficulty reduction for future polish!

By the way, did you happen to have a favorite character/LI Route? We would love to know if you do 🥺

Thank you again for playing, it makes me so happy to hear you enjoyed it overall! Happy Spooktober! 🐟☄️

Oh... Gosh, that would be Sanraya! She's awesome! Garett would be my second choice. Precious beans.
