I liked the polish of the game. The main menu, the graphics, the music and the sound effects were excellent. However, this game is not really that entertaining to play though. First of all, winning does not inherently feel good and losing does not inherently feel bad. Also, the game does not really seem to have interesting tactics or strategies. When I was playing the game, I just blindly spammed the left and right click buttons and picked up random powerups. Though the gameplay was not exciting to me, I did like the innovation of the game. I have never played a game like this. Overall, I like the unique concept of the game and its excellent artwork, but I wish some tweaking with the gameplay mechanics was done to make the game more interesting.
Thanks so much for the feedback! Any specific ideas on how to make the user have more of an impact on the result of the game? We considered less weapon drops so the player had to work with what they had, and didn't get to switch as often. We also considered different enemy types like an eraser that clears paint and eroded chalk that shoots you. We've already added local co-op and competitive multiplayer that we'll release after the jam, so hopefully that spices up the gameplay.
Well, to make winning more inherently fun, you can make levels in the game. After a player wins one level, the player goes on to the next level. This way, there is a sense of progress in the game. Making levels in this game is fitting to this game and can make winning more fun. As for the gameplay, maybe you can make the enemies shoot the player and you can make the player also have the ability to shoot enemies. Then, you could have the enemies and player have health (and the player should have more health than the enemies because he or she is alone). If the player dies, the player will have to restart the level. If an enemy dies, it will disappear. Every few seconds or so, another enemy will spawn. It would also be interesting if the NPCs also fought each other (since there are three types of characters in each game and two of the types are competing NPCs). While fighting, the player should also have the ability to put more paint on the canvas if they are concentrating on painting (e.g. pressing some buttons that are hard to press while fighting). By doing this, the player can get an immediate sense of danger that can compromise the player's objective, but the player would also have to think in the long term and actually try to get most of the paint on the canvas.
Splatoon in 2d. Super fun music, totally goes with your whole premise. It took me a couple of tries before I won, but now I wish there were more levels. Awesome idea. I would totally play local co-op of this with my 3yr old son.
