  • GDD: GDD seems nice. Would love images of the mechanics in the game mechanics section. Would also like if there were an development timeline. Game: Worth mention I played the GX web version. The menu's buttons seems little confused. Nice to see there is an form of coyote time. But the platform is very brutal for those who have motion disabilities.

Did you include your Game Design Document in your downloadable files?
Yes

Tell us about your game!
Hot Potato is a fast paced side scrolling action game. There is a spreading wall of fire which you need to run away from. If the fire touches you or you fall down a cliff into the pit of fire it's game over. Actually fairly complete prototype in it's current state with 2 endings and 2 difficulties. Could add more levels or other dangers later. No sound effects, only music.

Controls
A & D or arrow keys to run, space bar to jump.

Web version up on GX games as well:

Did you remember to include your Game Design Document?
Yes

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yes

Extra Notes
Solo dev, been doing it for only about a month and this is my first game. No prior experience other than being a bit of an amateur artist in my spare time though this is my first expedition into pixel art.

Figured out my browser issue on itch.io so now I have the browser version available on itch.io and it's working correctly.

Argh so upset, I fixed my wall sticking issue but I can't implement it because it's too late lol.  Judges don't use the web version link in the description, that one I am still working on and wasn't the version made for the jam.

This was fun, and was actually hard.  I figured the coyote jump out on my own, its  a well known game mechanic.  Was hard to beat both levels in 1 life but kinda liked 'feeling the heat' lol.

I got past the "big jump" and a bit further down but I agree with AlcatorGames If you don't let us know that's possible beforehand we will just assume it is a game-breaking bug and move on :P

on a second note it's a bit difficult to see the platforms you can jump on with the chosen background.

overall though, it's a good start keep it up.

Which engine are you using, and could you try exporting your game as a web-playable version, rather than downloadable?

Developer (3 edits)

I used Gamemaker to make it, I uploaded a web version on GX games.  I couldn't get it to run right on Itch.io, could only get it to come up tiny.  URL is here: https://gx.games/games/ptrdit/hot-potato/tracks/d288f7d2-2ae4-494c-86b4-bc8017a1...

OK, I tested it there, but couldn't make it over the first bigger jump. I tried double jump, but there doesn't seem to be any.

Developer

You can do a coyote jump in the game meaning you can jump even after walking a bit off of a ledge.  Try to test it out to see how far you can walk off and still jump.  The jump is very doable if done that way.

Well, it's your game, so I'm not going to tell you how to do it, but personally, unless a game is called "Coyote Time", it should not _demand_ coyote time usage to play :-)

Thanks for the feed back!  I went back and forth about that jump for a bit.  Since it's still before the deadline I went ahead and updated that jump to not be so frustrating.  I also added into my GDD that the coyote jump is a mechanic.  I just thought that was a common thing in platforming style games from everything I've ever played.

Yes, Coyote Time is a common thing, but it's not something that is required to progress (and definitely not on the very first jump), but rather, it's something that is there for players who mistime their jump.
