How did you use the theme/limitations?
By doing a little bit of research, I was able to come up with some nice sounding sus chords to drive some of the melodies using only the black keys. I had also made use of the Gb major key to separate the sections with the 'F' note being the only note within this key that I had to avoid as it was on a white key.

Did you take inspiration from another creation?
I may of subconsciously implemented some GioWizard into my track as I've been recently listening to some of his pieces but what really helped kick this song off was exploring other music programs but on handheld consoles! I tried Rytmik on the Nintendo 3ds and it did hold some charm to it but the loop-creating system it had going on made it a little too cumbersome for me after a while. So I tried my luck out with Korg Gadget on the Nintendo Switch and I may of found my favourite of coming up with ideas on the whim. Easy to use, with some of the best sounding VST pluggins I've heard on something other than a dedicated system!

Nice job! The melody sounds great, I like what you managed to do with only black notes :D

Thank you Nick! I basically just used the Gb major scale to compose most parts so it wasn't too tricky :)

I like it, it is very happy.

Don’t ask why but the first thing I though when listening to the first minute or so were Minecraft music discs, I don’t know, same vibe I guess…

Pretty cool.

Thank you for your comment cube, I quite like C418 and his music written for minecraft so thank you very much for the nice words!

Nice vibe!

The transition at 0'34" is short but excellent. It’s a real ear candy for me. And overall the sounds are pleasant.

Quintivium has already talked about the mixing ne techniques, so I’ll talk about the melodic part. It’s pretty but some musical phrases are too long and prevent the listener to « anticipate » what’s happening next. I felt a bit lost as if I didn’t know where the melody goes. If you want more precision on this point, I’m happy to answer.

Thank you for your feedback Selkione! Good ear, that part is probably my favourite part too and I'm hoping I can somehow replicate that again when I need it ha!

The first melody was a little tricky to finish as I was torn between certain movements if that's the part you mean. Yeah I'd very much appreciate a time stamp on where the melodies/riff becomes confusing so I can take it into account in the future. Thank you again 😊

Ok, I’m going to prepare you a score of the melodic part. It’s better to explain it with a visual support.

In exchange, I want a clue as to how you made your great transition ;)

Sounds good!

Just looked back at my project and it seems as though all I did was automate the pitch of the bass drum, thought I did more than that to it tbh lol

I think it helped having a 'low-bit' sounding bass drum to emphasise the pitch change across other frequency levels, roughly around the 1200Hz range.

Not very good at explaining the techy side of it really but that's my best take on it from what I can see going on through my flstudio project so I hope that helps 😅

I will try to be clear...

Here is your basic melody at 0'51".

As you can see, there are patterns (rhythmic motifs). Each bar has its own pattern. Some measures are similar and give the feeling to belong to the same pattern, that's why they are noted 4' and 4".

A pattern is not limited to one bar. It can be 2, it can be 4. Beyond that, the listener's ear might be more confused, but that's not forbidden.

Since we like more easily what we already know, it is necessary to propose a motive which returns either identical, or with a light alteration.

For this one, you can see that I propose a musical phrase of two bars that repeats itself. I then pasted all your patterns 4 for more coherence.

This is another proposal where I remove the whole note at the beginning that was out of place with the rest. It is an artistic proposal that is only a proposal. I don't think it's better than any other.

And finally, here's your melody reworked to give that famous question-answer feeling. Phrases 1 and 2 ask the question. Phrases 1 and 3 answer it. This is very commonly used and gives a complementary feel to the music.

Starting the question and answer with the same melody allows the listener to better follow what is going on.

Again, this is theory and it's good to follow it and know it. But breaking it can be cool too :)

I hope I made it clear

Wow I didn't expect something so in depth but it's very much appreciated for sure!!

I would admit that I do sometimes over-complicate a melody to a point where the patterns for each phrase will start drifting down their own route..

I can see that your proposals on the patterns look easier to follow with subtle variations in places to keep it interesting but without straying too far away from the pack. It rhythmically makes sense too.

Hope you don't mind but I took screen shots of these just so I can refer to them when writing. I'm grateful for this, truly :)

It was a pleasure. I learn a lot by analyzing the music of others

I feel like you have a really solid foundational piece that could be improved significantly with some better mixing. Tonal balance is something to really keep in mind, as the bass overpowers the rest of the track imo. Maybe also consider some creative use of sidechaining or LFOs on the bass. Keep up the good work!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your comment Quintivium, yeah I kind of bodged up the bass a little bit but didn't realise that until I had already submitted it so that's on me for not testing it on other speakers beforehand.. I'm unfamiliar with sidechaining but it's certainly something I can learn and play around with for next time!
