I played the web version. Immediately from the beginning, I loved the artstyle of this game and the sound track. The opening sequence is pretty cool and added a nice touch. Blast seems like a really cool character with an interesting past. The world itself is pretty nice, and the idea of AI taking over is very real now considering chat gpt 4o's release :D. I think you have a good base for a great game here.
The bane of this game in my opinion though are the controls. Things are a bit clunky. For example, you can't move while jumping until player reaches max height, which really makes platforming hard unless you have a running headstart. And even when you do, the character goes too far to the right or the left even if you let go of AD input. Also, shooting while running will give the player momentum that will persist for a good couple of steps even if AD input stops. This made it difficult at times to align with enemies and shoot them, considering the tight spaces enemies spawn in. Also, I noticed shooting at the top of the jump consumes 4-5 bars instead of 1? Is this a bug or a design choice? I find it very peculiar if it is a design choice, as the green tank-like enemy are usually situated on high spots and the only feasible way I found to attack them without getting nuked is to jump shoot. But then I have to spend a good 20 seconds jumping, shooting in mid air, waiting for my bar to recharge, repeating this sequence 5-6 times till they die. I would recommend halving their health as they simply do too much damage to have that much health. Using shift to climb ladders is a tad annoying as others pointed out.
Also, does the game have checkpoints? I went to an area marked as "S" on the minimap expecting to see a save point, but found nothing. I got to the rat-like boss with drones dropping grenades and died there and I really dont like having to go all the way back from the start everytime. But this could have been my fault for not finding the checkpoint. I also didn't see any indicator of which movement mod I have equipped, did I miss something?
I got hit by the enemy carrying a bat and i got shot into orbit. This reminded me of getting hit by the giants in skyrim, 10/10 would get hit again. Even though the map is a bit empty, I still like the design of the levels. There seemed to be a lot to explore and a lot to find which got me excited. Again, you have a very cool concept here. All these issues are relatively minor and shouldn't be hard to fix. Don't feel discouraged about it. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your Review, i will cover each of these issues in detail
Overall allot of things are being polished and in 8 days i will upload the latest dev build and continue working on it throughout the next 3 months jam hopefully with a far more complete project. I really hope you guys stay with me during this development as with myself i will continue following all your work, I really want to be part of a great MV Community
Sounds great! I'm quite excited to see more of your game. I definitely see the potential and will try to keep up with the game. Best of luck!
Also, I loved getting launched into orbit. I legit laughed the first time it happened. That was a compliment as opposed to criticism, apologies if it came out negative.
I got it :) it is funny and unless i get to many others complaining i will have to reduce it :( but I am very excited for what i have in store for you guys and look forward to receiving critiques and compliments
I really like the art of this game, and it has a distinct atmosphere. The minimap is a nice feature. The movement wasn't really doing it for me though. Jumping felt clunky since there's no acceleration while in the air. When enemies are too close to you, it becomes very hard to hit them since the gun goes past their hitbox, which would be fine except that there are a lot of enemies standing on very short platforms which makes spacing yourself extremely difficult. Combine that with the jumping thing and it gets kind of frustrating. Also you can't shoot while jumping (only falling) which makes it really hard to hit enemies on ledges. I saw you said you fixed that though, so I'd love to try to play again once the fix is implemented.
Thank you for your honest review, though this was a 3 month Jam, there was allot i wanted to get done before the deadline and in most cases i did get the majority of what i wanted done. as in my dev logs during this development stage i have been contending with the jump and enemy issues and i promise when the lock down is finished and the results are in I will be making allot of changes to the way the game controls, in short I am completely in aggreance with your critique and i made the decision quite early on to focus on getting a playable game up on to the jam and possibly resubmitting it in the next extended jam, my game is playable throughout the jams and all feedback during development is taken into consideration.
the game has a nice art style, the controls wasn't working quite right for me also it seem a little strange to shoot with left clicking if you can't aim also the movement would probably flow better of you use the down key for going down the ladders, over all I believe it's can be a great game.
Yeah the controls issue again 😅 this game is controller playable. However I do agree, when I was developing the game I didn't pay too much attention to the controls scheme. In fact just used unity's default system. For future versions I am going to switch to unity's new input system for a more customized experience. overall I'm glad you like it and blazes journey has only just began
Cool game mate !!!
Very nice art and nice sound effects and music, the level design is very beautiful! But i was getting trouble with the controls, the grenade is not working and the climb stairs is a little tricky to work. Also, some keys like ALT is a shortcut in the browser like Microsoft Edge so maybe this is the cause that the grenade is not working.
ahh yea the controls are something I didn't get round to improving, in order to use the grenades you needs to defeat the rat boss who gives you this upgrade when it is defeated ,you will find hin on the far left of the map, I was meant to put some narrative in game but time constraints meant I had to put this on the future build, the idea is to continue development after the ratings are finished
this game is also controller compatible if you have one, that will help with the control problems unfortunately I'm using unity's old input system so its very much default keys sadly
I didn't know that the game is controller compatible, i will play again with a controller. If you're gonna continue developing the game i will be excited to play it again when is finished or it receive a new update!
Yes the game is controller compatible, i will be playing more in to this as i develop the game further. I just wish i could upload a bug fixed version as today i have resolved the jump shoot problem and now the game plays as expected (somewhat).
I fully am devoted to developing this game further i have a lot more features coming and the all important narrative element which is demostrated slightly on the opening cutscene
so stick around as soon as voting is over i will be updating the online version and soldiering on with development. This game has proved to be quite popular and look forward to continuing on with it
Hey guys I done it, there is 2 versions now the online demo and the offline SMVM 23 version
Nice art
Thank you very much i do like these sets allot
When I played this, I out loud said this is probably winning.
That would be great wouldnt it, lets see how it goes though. I am so glad you like my project as i have enjoyed making it.
