An interesting intrigue! I would love to find out more. I like the music, the colours, the old furniture, the glowing eyes and the greenish shadow around Rei´s feet. I was frustrated not being able to reach out for the statue, but I guess I will have to solve something first. I also took me some time to figure out how to use the controls, but when I palyed a second time it got easier. The second round I could also read the text of the book better - too fast the first time. I am excited for a continuation!
This seems really cute while maintaining a creepy atmosphere. I love that Rei's eyes stay lit up in the dark and I really want to know whats going on with the curse! Like others, I found the camera control to be a bit inconvenient and encountered an invisible object in front of the fireplace, and would have liked to be able to control the text of the history book. But otherwise its very charming, particularly the art, story, and the girl's little giggle. Very cute!
To start, I absolutely love the overall art direction for this game! The atmosphere is a really good blend of creepy-cute, something which I personally find really appealing. The low-poly style really works well here, and having the stylized furniture to match the house is a really nice touch - it definitely feels like a well made environment! The music also adds to this, giving off a soft yet uneasy vibe. Overall really nice! Rei's model is also very cute and her design is very well made. I love her little hairclip and the starry motifs for her! (Kind of makes me feel like she would be revealed to be some kind of witch too, if the game continued past this demo). They way her eyes seem to glow in the rooms is very charming, too. I also enjoyed the first puzzle, despite its simplicity. The story definitely had me hooked - I'm excited to learn more about the origins of the house and how the witch trials relate to the overall story!
The major issue of this demo is the camera. The inverted camera for looking up and down vs the normal camera for looking left and right really threw me off sometimes. It is also quite finicky to control; I felt that the game worked better when the camera was fixed behind the player in the small hallway between the two rooms (when entering the last room, it would also get caught on the door and would allow me to see into Rei's model). Another issue I experienced is that I felt that it was not clear with what you could and could not interact with. I found myself clicking around the room hoping to see more dialogue or find any other items I could interact with.
Some other things I experienced which are more nit-picky than actual problems for a demo build. When trying to get the candle there seemed to be some kind of invisible object that was able to be climbed, and I also found this object by the correct painting (although this one was far less replicable than the one by the fireplace). I also noticed some issues in the first room with lighting Rei's model, at a certain point in the room she is far too overexposed. There were also some noticeable texture issues, which seemed to be a mix of both the room baking incorrectly and the shadow engine not functioning correctly.
I'm excited to see more if you decide to update this demo or finish the project to completion! It is very charming and the atmosphere is its biggest strength. Congrats on making a demo with so much potential!
The game still has a few problems, but overall the theme and style of it seems solid and the concept behind it is super interesting to me. I do think with enough time and polish, this studio will have a great game on their hands.
The visual style of the game is really neat and I expecially like the stylized furniture. The character is cute and I like the different expressions in the drawings for the dialogue. I did have problems with the camera, since I use two screens and the mouse cursor could move outside of the game. The puzzle was also unclear to me, I managed to solve it by random chance. The text was to fast for me to read. I'm a slow reader, but the player should be able to read at their own pace, and skip text if they want to.
This game is really neat! I'm always a sucker for some games with a spooky atmosphere and this one does great with setting up the mood right from the start. The visuals are really nice and pair nicely with the music to draw you in to the story.
Like with other players, I did however have some issues with the camera. It was pretty sensitive when trying to move it around to look at specific things that caught my interest. The information in the book is interesting, but I wish that there was either was a system to click through it instead of the words automatically scrolling or a way to reread it after the first time. There was also an issue where after reading the book, something invisible appears in front of the fireplace and is able to be climbed.
One thing I wish there was more of is interactions with Rei and her environment. She's an interesting character and I would love to get to know more of her personality, even if it's just through the occasional comment about an object you inspect. The way she idles and her overall posture is a nice touch to give her some characterization, I just want more!
In short, this was a very fun little demo and it left me really interested and wanting to play more to find out just exactly was going on. I'm really eager to see what the future will bring!
I ADORE the look and atmosphere of this game! The dark, yet enticing atmosphere coupled with some very promising visuals made this little demo a very pleasant experience. I am eager to play more and learn more about Rei and her world.
What stood out to me the most was, obviously, the art direction. I thoroughly enjoyed the look and feel of the environment (especially the furniture models) and Rei herself. I would love it if Rei's character art in her dialogue window were a little larger, though. On my screen, although the UI was clear and dialogue was easy to read, I found it difficult to see her face. I feel that maybe cropping the art a bit closer might make it easier to see her face when she changes expressions? Just some food for thought!
The music is lovely and I can't wait to hear what other songs may be included in later levels- please keep it up! Weirdly enough, I really enjoyed the sound of Rei walking on the creaky floorboards. I feel like it definitely added something to the atmosphere. I would love to hear more ambient sounds too! Maybe some distant, muffled rainfall pattering against a window pane or wind to remind players of the world outside of the mansion?
It's been said a few times before, but I did struggle with the camera controls on PC. The WASD controls to move were intuitive, easy to pick up on and pleasantly responsive, however I did find wrangling the camera to be challenging at times... I did find that some of the dialogue went by a bit fast too at times as well, although that might have been me.
Overall, REI is a very promising game and I can't wait to play more. Keep it up, Cat's Eye!
The design of the levels and characters is so nice, I love it! And the story is really interesting as well, I loved the first riddle about the witch trials!
The camera controls were really difficult on pc though and made it hard to look and move around easily, sadly-- And when reading the book on the trials, the text speed was a little too speedy for my tired slow brain @7@)b But it's really promising and I'd love to see more!!
We're pleased that the things we included caught your interest, and we can't wait to deliver more! We will make sure to fix the camera and text mechanics to make it more user friendly in the future.
Thank you very much for trying out our game and the kind words! <3
Such a nice feeling! I want more of this so badly! I finished the first puzzle and wanted there to be more so badly.
I love the whole story and background into the witch trials in Sweden. There was a lot I dodn't know about and I'm not even sure what is true yet! I will have to search things up.
The only thing that bugged out a little bit was the cammera during play, but otherwise I loved the feel, art style, and general idea and design of the game! It felt super creepy and intersting. I need more!
Thank you very much for playing our game!
We would've wanted there to be more to the demo as well. If a pandemic hadn't struck we would have at least 1 extra puzzle, more story related events and dialogue, and we might have figured out that camera in time too. Working from a distance from each other made everything a lot more complicated than it had to be, so it's a real shame.
Your words are very encouraging! Hopefully, we will be able to deliver more in the future! <3
I played this on pc and it was hard to say the least, maybe it bugged out or something, but after I entered the first room with the fire, there was nothing more to the game. The camera was way off and I couldn´t access one of the corridors for some reason! (because of the camera not following)
That's odd, did you check the book on the table? It's supposed to trigger a cutscene. If something went wrong, perhaps you could try to launch the game again and if it still doesn't work, maybe the browser version works better.
The corridor originally lead to another location, but because of lack of time we couldn't finish that area so we blocked it off. You didn't miss anything! We definitely need to fix that camera though.
Thank you very much for trying it out and giving us your feedback!
Super nice game! I was a bit scared all the time but luckily the sun is shining outside so I could take breaks to breathe. Very nice story and very fun puzzle. I played in the browser version and it was very impressive! Can't wait for the full game to release <3
Thank you very much for trying out our demo! We intend to make the final game a lot scarier, we hope you'll still enjoy it <3
Nice graphic, and mood of the game! I had some troble getting further after the ghost appear, so some indication might be helpful. The speed of the text explaining witch-burning, would be nice if you as a player could control. Story-wise you get dragged in completely! Good job!
Yeah, we're thinking on top of making the book easier to read, we will highlight certain words (like burning and witch) and perhaps have a message on the wall to further clue the player in on what to do.
Thank you so much for playing and for the kind words!
The game so far looks really good and I like how the puzzle had elements where you had to really look at the room to know what to do, the camera movement though was a bit clunky and hard to work with, it would only really let me look at things properly if my mouse was positioned at the top of my screen, I glitched a bit, I was able to walk on something invisible in front of the fire place and go into corridors im sure I wasn't supposed to yet leading me to glitch into the floor. However, overall I believe this is a good game so far, just with a few touch ups needed
Thank you very much for the feedback and for testing the game!
There was supposed to be a dark substance coming out of the walls, but something in the coding went wrong when the game was exported. It was just a placeholder though, so you didn't miss too much, it will look way better later! We will also try our hardest to work out the camera clunkiness, and find a better way to operate it.
Thanks for the heads-up about glitching into the floor, we will have a look at that!
Playing on the PC, I wasn't used to the inverted mouse controls, which made it tricky. The camera tracking was clunky, too - at times, I couldn't even see the character as she'd wandered off down a corridor and the camera was facing down a different corridor. Sometimes, she was walking directly towards the camera. Sort that out, though, and you have the makings of a very atmospheric game here!
The text we have to read was fine when it was in her head (although the sound effects were louder than they needed to be). When it wasn't in her head, though, it needed to pause at the end of each batch. I'd have put it in the same window as her thoughts, personally, and made the window resize to fit it.
The camera and the book text are some of our biggest issues for sure, we will do our best to fix those features so the gameplay works smoother in the future! The text sound will also be adjusted and switched out completely with something more subtle and fitting.
As for the corridor, we had originally planned for the player to be able to go upstairs, but was too rough compared to everything else so we decided to block the wall off. We should've done a better job so it was more clear that the player couldn't go in that direction though. You didn't miss anything!
Thank you very much for the kind words and for taking the time to test our demo!
Hello! I'm just going to send you some feedback since I don't have the opportunity to do so with the ratings. (SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED IT)
1. The camera controls are very hard to use, which is off-putting. I would suggest you using an approach where you have left mouse button as just clicking objects and holding in right mouse button to look around, so I can both click and look around if I want to.
2. The text when reading the book is auto-scrolling. Fortunately I am a fast reader, but everyone can't read that fast. I think you could have used a button to press like with the inner monologue and dialogue so that everyone has the chance to read your story.
3. I really like the touch with the statue. I honestly think that's the best thing about the game. The reason why it's so good is because in this game, you're meant to explore and pay attention to your surroundings to find out more, and the statue lets you both think for yourself and rewards you for being attentive. I would have loved more of that!
Hi! Thank you for playing our game and for the feedback!
We have struggled a lot with the camera, we're definitely going to work more on it to make it less obnoxious. Your ideas on how to improve it are very much appreciated~ <3
For the book, we're thinking of having a picture show up instead that the viewer can exit out of once they have read the passage at their own pace. It should make it easier to skim through it if the player needs to check the info again.
We also love tiny details like that, if we decide to continue working on this game, there should be different ways to arrive to the solution and small details for attentive players to find!
