Feel free to ask questions about the jam here..!

How do you give the prizes?

Host

We will give Amazon Gift Cards for the winners.

  • Participants will receive an Amazon gift card for the Amazon website that applies to their country. No other gift cards or prizes will be distributed or swapped.

I mean, how you give the gift cards?

Host

We send them to e-mail address of the winner.

Ok, I understood

Can we use particles in our game?

Host

Particles are allowed:

  • Particle systems must also use only the allowed shapes as individual particles and avoid arrangements that suggest forbidden shapes.

FAQ: https://itch.io/jam/goedware-game-jam-limited-shapes/topic/5095833/faq

Oh ok,thanks, btw i have promoted the jam on my youtube channel in case you missed it JThegamedev

Host

Top, we have added you to the promo contender list :)
If you have a link, we can like it also :) !

How does the art rating work if we can only use set shapes? Sorry if it might be a dumb question but i am genuinely confused

Host (2 edits)

It will be used for how well you used the allowed shapes, not using other shapes and also you can still polish with particle effects, color, shades and bloom etc. for example. That is also visual design. So how you mix shapes, colors  effects into a nice visual design.

PS: Be aware that particle system can only contain particles that are in the allowed shape list like circle and regular pentagon.

Best example I can give: let's say I want to make Saturn (the planet with the rings), a very simple and basic one.

Can I use the sphere to make the planet, and a circle to be the ring? The circle would be "cutting the sphere in half". Also, for the textures, can it be the blurry visuals of planets and the concentrinc rings for the ring?

All in all, there are still only two shapes (sphere and circle), though the camera might make the circle look oval sometimes...

Host

That seems to me ok. Sphere and circle are allowed. If by camera perspective it sometimes looks as an oval or cutting in half that is not a problem. The underlying shapes are still the correct ones and you are not deliberate creating ovals.
Blurry and concentric rings are allowed as long as the rings are circles of course and no other new shapes are introduced by texturing.

If we use the pyramid in 3D, certain camera angles would depict a triangle, square, pentagon, etc. Is this something that we are expected to avoid, and taken into consideration for the art category? Unless the pyramid is at least partially transparent it will always be showing as some 2D shape.

Host(+1)

Yes indeed, but if we can see in 3D that it is a pyramid by rotating or walking around or multiple angles or lighting and shadows, than it is ok and you do not need to avoid that sometimes it can look like a triangle from a certain angle. Only if it always looks like a triangle and never can be seen as a real pyramid it is not allowed.

Can we use shaders that arent just circles or pentagons? lets say i wanted to add a water shader, could i do that?

Host

Yes, you can.
Shaders and textures may change colour, lighting, or material effects, but they may not introduce new, clearly recognizable shapes.
Also the original shape must remain visually clear.
Example not allowed: Applying  a brick texture where each brick is clearly a rectangle.

From the FAQ as extra:

  • Transparency, Materials & Effects:
    • Transparency, outlines, and visual effects (like glow, bloom or shaders) are allowed as long as they don't visually introduce new shapes or suggest forbidden ones.
    • Particle systems must also use only the allowed shapes as individual particles and avoid arrangements that suggest forbidden shapes.
    • Fog effects are allowed for subtle atmosphere, but they cannot form distinct or recognizable shapes.
    • Materials are allowed, but shapes must remain clearly recognizable. Do not texture shapes to resemble other geometric forms.

So, lets say i use a huge pentagon as the backrgound but since the game windows is rectangular it looks like a rectangle,is it still allowed?

Host

A single-color or gradient background is also allowed by the way and if a shape is cropped or cut off by the screen boundaries, it still counts as the original shape. But if we never see the pentagon or bounds, you can also use rule that a single color background is also just good.

So for a  2d platformer can i have the ground be a solid color plane  which might look like a rectangle and the background be a solid color as well?

Host(+1)

Yes, that is in the rules:

Exception: One flat ground plane or floor is permitted for gameplay purposes. Solid-colored or gradient backgrounds are also allowed.

Hi, I had a question regarding the walls. I'm creating a 2D game where the border of the game closes in when the player loses a life. Would I be able to make the walls still retain the rectangular shape as defined by the original game border, or would this break the rules of using only pentagons & circles? I drew a quick graphic below to explain what I mean a little more easily:

Host (1 edit) (+1)

No, I would say break the rules because they are clear rectangle like shapes that come into view.

it's in the rules that you can't mix shapes to create other complex shapes, but that rule is a bit vague to me, like, would something like this be allowed? the background rocks and crosshair do overlap and kinda create a different shape, but are also still clearly recognisable as circles.

Host

That is OK because clearly recognizable as circle indeed.

Ok, I had a similar question. Since you explained that walls weren't allowed because they suggested rectangles, I was thinking of creating walls made of circles similar to the orange in @-kippie-'s image. Would this work?

Host

Yes, that would probably work as long as they are clearly circles.

Are "Donut shapes" Allowed? for context i was making an health bar and it'd be an hollow circle kind of like a donut, is this allowed?

Host

Donuts not.. But that is because it is a 3d shape (torus).. But outline circle or hollow circle is allowed in 2d is allowed.

Wait: so a flat ground is allowed?

Host

Yes it is, you can find it in the FAQ/Rules in this section:

  1. Use Only the Allowed Shapes: All visual elements (sprites, models, backgrounds, UI, characters, etc.) must be composed of only the revealed shapes. No custom or additional shapes are allowed. Exception: One flat ground plane or floor is permitted for gameplay purposes. Solid-colored or gradient backgrounds are also allowed.

Thank you, I have the info I need.

would this work?

Host

Yes, I think so. Do make sure the floor has no texture with shapes that are not allowed. Could not see whether it were squares of circle pattern.
