I really like this project! It's super simple, but has a clear, and most importantly, very fun gameplay loop. Controls feel great, movement looks great, and using the 2d filter over 3d model style is a really nice touch.
The only real "complaints" I have are that the UI numbers aren't super clear as to what they represent, and that I wish there was some visual identification of the left and right boundaries.
Additionally, I found one, very small bug, where shooting simultaneously to turning around very quickly shoots a bullet in both the previous and newly pointed to directions.
Great job, love the art style, and the extra touch of the interactive menu!
Thanks! I think this is super valid feedback, I wrote the bug down to maybe fix later if I revisit this game. About the left and right boundary, I tried to do a unintrusive thing where there is planet in the background at the right, center, and left of the stage to show aproximately where the boundaries are. They are different colors and sizes in the hopes of being distinct enough to show where you are on the map. Obviously that didn't work out great, so I think I'd need to just go back and add clear lines that pop up when you get close or something.
Thanks again! I'll keep your critique in mind!
wow, really cool graphics (of course, it's you!)!
How did you do the ship? Is it a 3d model with a pixel filter, or is it a hand crafted spritesheet or something else?
Thanks for saying so! Yeah it's a 3D model with a pixel filter, I started 2D but didnt have time to draw every angle, so I switched back to 3D lol
control are fun and there is sense of difficulty with each wave. Love the visual style.
With lil more polish this will be a really fun game. Reminded me of defender.
Thanks! Defender was the main inspiration for it! I figured old arcade games are super re-playable, so I tried to go for something like that.
I think you've got a great little POC here!
Nit Picks:
I think the visuals are gorgeous and really work in a cohesive style. Did you do them yourself?
I think the controls feel very nice and tight. It feels like there takes some skill to both navigate and aim.
I like the little touch of having the ship shoot your selected option from the main menu.
Any plans to expand on this and introduce new enemies/upgrades/gameplay etc?
Thanks for playing! I totally agree with all your nitpicks. The middle number is how many enemies are left in the wave, but you're right that it isn't clear nor stated anywhere.
I did the visuals myself with the exception of the spaceship 3D model; I used Kenney's space asset pack. I gotta go back and add some credits.
With some of these positive comments, it does make me feel like it'd be worth it to come back and add more stuff. Thanks for the kind words and thanks again for playing!
Actually really smooth controls and really fun to play, it scales really quick and becomes challenging before you know it. Nice and simple visuals.
Thank you for playing! I appreciate the feedback :)
The controls are pretty fun, to give it more content you could make the map cylindrical where your moving around a planet at the equator, that sort of gives you an automatic story and more content options like protect satellites and astronauts, guide ship to dock safely, drag items to base, to build some super weapon power ups, etc.
I like the idea of sort of killing 2 birds with 1 stone by adding a simple visual trick that also adds story/theming to the project. In defender, the arcade game that inspired this game, you need to defend little dudes from aliens. I think your suggestions would mesh well with what I have so far. Thanks for the feedback!
Controls were great, menu was present and thematically appropriate, and the music fit the game well. Nice work!
Thank you for taking the time to play and I really appreciate the feedback!
