I feel like this project had a lot of effort put into it. It's pretty cool that you have two different controls inside of it. A few things I would note is the charge time of the cannon. It feels a bit slow. The turning feels good but that charge is a little slow.
I also feel like the fighting is a little clunky, I think something that would help is if the player sort of snapped in the direction of the enemy. But I think this was a cool project especially for a solo submission :O

Thanks for the playing my game and giving feedback! My goal with the cannon was to make it so that the player would eventually be forced into a last stand in third person combat, but I agree that it feels a bit slow and leads to the player feeling overwhelmed by ships quickly. A targeting mechanic would definitely make the third person combat feel more precise and snappy.

I love pirate-themed games.  The graphics in this one almost have that Monkey Island kind of vibe to them. I found the camera control quite difficult as it seems like the mouse sensitivity might be too high. That said I felt most comfortable running around with a sword slashing pirates - the cannon didnt feel as responsive as just a sword. I played a similair themed game previously and the premise there was there was a hut on the island that had treasure on it and thats what the pirates were trying to get to - that might be an interesting angle to consider if you want to carry on building the game. Great job!

Thanks for the feedback! I was going back and forth on either a day or night setting, and ultimately decided the night setting worked better for the game. That is interesting that you felt more comfortable with the third person combat. I would like to have added a target mechanic that would make swinging at enemies a hit easier, but glad you enjoyed it! The treasure idea is fantastic! As is the score is just based on how long the player survives but I think a more specific objective like you mentioned would be needed if this project was expanded on.

A bit hard to kill enemies as the controls felt a little off, but overall, impressive game!

Developer

Thanks for playing my game! My main focus was on making the cannon feel good, I think that the third person controls and combat could use a bit of work. Thank you for the feedback!

Cool theme! It was fun trying to hit pirates with cannons are hard. The dark lighting made it feel more hopeless (night raid by pirates).

The controls for sword was a bit wonky, it felt like the swing wasnt always where I aimed it. But its really cool to see a full 3D game in a 10day game jam!

Solid entry!

Developer

Thanks for trying out my game! The character animations are a bit off. I think I need to speed up the attack animation and add a targeting camera that tracks the current enemy. As is, the player just swings and it isnt tracking a specific enemy. Thanks for the feedback!

Love the theme and setting, and it was a unique blend of gameplay mechanics! Good stuff!

Developer

Thank you for trying it out! Glad you liked it!

It was a tough game but really interesting combination of mechanics!

Developer

Thank you for playing it! It definitely can get difficult as time goes on and more ships approach. I feel like some improvements to the combat such as a targeting camera could make it feel less daunting. I tried limiting how many foot pirates could be on the island at one time to 5 to try and ease the difficulty.

Limiting the pirates might be a good way to tune difficulty. And the targeting camera you mentioned might also help. If there was a way to scale the pirates more over time where for the first several minutes you were fighting just one or two. Then once you've figured it out the difficulty ramps up? Something like that?

Developer

Thanks for the suggestions! I think a gradual ramp up in enemies and difficulty would really help the game feel more balanced and fair to the player.

Shooting a cannon feels good, I like that you can shoot pirates using the cannon.
But fighting with a sword feels a bit weird, which is understandable for that it was 10 days long gamejam.
Great job!

Developer

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah the animations for the sword combat are a bit off. Something I would like to have worked on more.

Very nice game, I liked the cannon and the sounds the pirates made when landing. Great detail that the cannon made a scraping noise when moving :)

Developer

Thank you! Yeah the cannon rotating sfx was a last minute addition, I thought it would really add to the feel of the cannon!

That was fun!

Firing the cannon is super satisfying. Once the pirates get on your island you definitely are in trouble but I like the pressure of trying to keep the boats away before that happens.
Its fun and addicting nice work!

Developer

Thank you! Looking forward to trying out your game!
