OMFG I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
I wanna write a fic now, it's so peak
btw if you like toxic Yuri, there is a yuriful storyline in our game as well ><
THANK U VERY MUCH :D i would actually die (in a good way) if a canary fic was made aaaaaaaa
(ember yuri takeover is real :3.... i'll check it out!)
Such a cool take on the theme! Big fan of the art, although the sudden change in its style is a little bit jarring at times (during the interactive minigames), still beautiful nonetheless. Is this perhaps inspired by the idiom "canary in the coal mine"? 👀
hehe yes exactly! canary in the coal mine!! we also kinda based the story on plato's allegory of the cave (cave... underground....) but i'm not sure how obvious that part was :P thanks for checking our game out!
Yes!! There is a lot of small detail in the game, one of which being the medicine book where you can read about carbon monoxide poisoning - the toxic gas that canary birds were used to detect!
Very good game, the art is amazing and despite it being a visual novel it is still very much enjoyable. Great job!
Thanks for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed!!!!
this game is so good!!!!
the artist has to give me one on one lessons

i dont know if i'm qualified to give art lessons guys LOL
This game is really good! The visuals and audio work really well to set the atmosphere, and the subtle foreshadowing makes it even better on replay. Some of the minigames feel a little odd, especially the cooking minigame, but that's the only issue with the game I can think of (even then, it's a very minor issue). The part where Canary asks about the bird's eyes also reminded me a bit of In Stars and Time, though I don't know if that was just a coincidence.
thanks so much for playing! as the person behind the eyes question, i've never heard of In Stars and Time before now but it looks so awesome and now i Have to play it
Creating the right music to convey the atmosphere I wanted took some time because I was struggling to find inspiration for my part of the tracks but I'm really proud of the results. Thanks for the feedback too, the minigames aren't as polished as we'd like them to be mainly due to the time constraint and I hope the rest of the game made up for it! We made sure to build little hints into the game so the endings don't feel forced. I looked up In Stars and Time and it definitely looks interesting!
"There's nothing wrong with being in a bomb shelter with your best friend, right?" 🤨
Overall, very cool and somewhat creepy depending on the ending. Kudos to the artist, they cooked.
Yup definitely nothing weird happening :)
Nice to know what you thought of it and I'm glad you liked the artwork too!
Interesting concept for a story and interpretation of the theme. The sudden theme change of some elements such as feeding and cooking can feel out of place but considering how polished the rest of the graphics are for a Jam I can definitely let that slide. Congrats on making an interesting visual novel, short and sweet!
Thank you for playing!!! We cooked up lots of ideas for a story during Campfire for the them 'Beneath the Surface' and eventually settled on Maria's and Canary's story. Visual Novels tend to have a lot of artwork to do </3 so it was hard to get all the scenes and assets we wanted done in the time we had. We did the best we could to make the game enjoyable and we're glad you found it interesting!
yesss, ty for the feedback! i'm thinking of upgrading those minigame assets you mentioned in a future update when i have time
10/10, good art, good visuals, good story would rate it if i could
Thank you so much <3 A lot of work went into the planning stage of mapping out the game sequences and choices before we started coding again. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the story!
tysm!!!!!! your rating is. in our hearts. if that makes sense O.o
i wonder who made the art and gui.... they must be so cool. cough cough cough
yes i wonder
