How are there so many submissions on day one?

First time jammin’ with my kids. Is this a normal occurrence that there are 25+ submissions in 10 hours?

Haven’t had the time to play any of them, but will hopefully get around to it soon enough. My kids are asking if that’s normal and I’m like “They are either insanely experienced, cheating by having something coded in advance, using AI or just putting out nonsense.” Can anyone with actual experience confirm?

Much appreciated.

Some people, me included, like submitting early and pushing incremental updates.

Gotchu. I guess there are a million ways to bake that pie.

usually, there are a lot of people that submit games early, they usually make the game, then submit it the second the jam starts, not caring what the theme is, usually these games don't win though, so no need to worry, but sometimes, people do update games after they are submitted, in this case, you still don't have to worry, because the base of their game is very rushed

Sometimes people submit premade games so that they can get reviews and attention etc. But they get removed pretty fast because it doesn't follow the rules so don't worry.

Loving the community. Thanks for the answers guys. We are not worried about winning. I keep telling the kids it will be a miracle if we even finish the damn thing, seeing as how there’s so much to do before the school starts in addition to making this game. We’re thoroughly enjoying the process! This is one of the few places where the participation is rewarding enough.

Yeah there's always a good chunk of people who just submit their pre-made games to game jams in an attempt to get attention on them (they get removed since they go against the rules) but there's also some people who pre-submit and slowly update their page! Nothing to worry about though :) I hope you and your kids have lots of fun on the jam! Also my first time doing one here's hoping i finish something haha!
