How does the game fit the theme?
This game fit the theme because in order to progress you need to risk yourself in order to shoot down enemies because some of them shoots back and if you succeed doing that you gain experience which in turn helps you to upgrade your skills every time you level up.
What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
None

Yeah I also immediately noticed the flat attack cooldown duration upgrade and wanted to become a laser. It is a completely broken upgrade that is just objectively better than any other upgrade, especially after getting one damage upgrade that makes you oneshot everything, which makes upgrade choice rather uninteresting. However, I cannot deny the simple fun of abusing this to get overpowered and probably wouldn't have stuck around nearly as long if it were balanced. I really need to criticize the mixed pixel art resolutions though, it just looks so messy and unintentional. Consistency in art style is very important.
Congrats on making a game though!
Really great concept! was a bit slow to my taste so I didn't get to see that many upgrades, but this can definitely be refined into something awesome! 👏
Great game! For a shoot 'em up, perhaps a slightly faster pace would make it even more exciting? Well done nonetheless!
Everything worked well, very well done!! More upgrades variety would've been cool too! Awesome job!
Honestly, this is a good game and nice idea.
When I saw that the fire rate upgrade was a flat reduction in seconds, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. I stuck around long enough to get the fire rate all the way down to 0.1 second but it looks like that is the floor. I was hoping to get a bullet laser out of the deal, but its probably for the best that this safeguard is in place. I have to imagine the code wouldn't really be happy finding a negative number there. In any case, it would probably be fine to bump up the strength of the upgrade to give a bit more benefit up-front. The ships that shoot bullets that collide and eat your own bullets can be pretty taxing early on when bullets per second is scarce.
A nice retro-style game with enjoyable sound design. The only thing missing is more sound effects when enemies are destroyed. It would be great if you could take a moment to rate our game!
The game is pretty nice, but the boss flew out of reach and I got softlock at the 10th wave ^^'. But I enjoyed the idea and the atmosphere of the game is great, too bad I cannot play more!
Thank you guys for the feedback! I wish we would upload it soon enough to advertise it so we can playtest it with anyone.
On the movement though, yea we should implement that before the other mechanics, but we got carried away with the other aspects (programming beginners). We actually have some ideas for it but didn't come through before the deadline. Nonetheless, I appreciated all of your feedback!
Love the idea, the movement seems a little too limited
Cool game, I played it until the boss flew off the left of the screen and the game broke but whilst it was working the game was fun. I think the starting fire rate is a bit low, I picked every fire rate upgrade I could and there were still so many enemies on screen I couldn't not run into them constantly. Overall though a fun game, good job!
Oh, I see what you're talking about. Definitely making an update about that boss being broken. Thanks!
Very fun game, all i have to say is the same restricting movement as everyone else lmao, i had fun for the most part, well done :D
Fun game! I feel like the restricting movement didn't feel super great but I saw what you were going for.
