Second of all, since it’s 2 A5 sheets (or the front and back of a letter sheet), is it alright to lay it out as a trifold?

Quick correction (I assume this is a typo in your post): 4 A5 pages (or the front and back of a letter sheet) is the limit.

But yeah, we've had a couple people suggest this, my judgement is that as long as its not taking up more paper than the rules permit then its cool if you fold it in a different way. So a trifold or (if you want to get wild) 8 A6 pages is totally cool. I guess you could also do 2 A4 pages if you wanted but that seems boring.
