So incredibly torn on this.
The presentation is top notch; There's a ton of nice little "game feel" touches: squishy sound effects, slight terrain deformation, the environment reacting, etc.
The "learn as you play" world building is alright too, with handy little animations.
Seems decently well programmed; it's responsive, performant, and smooth.
The music is nothing special, but suits the mood absolutely.
The zoomy camera isn't too bad, snapping only when you reach a screen edge.
But wow, I can't get over how bad the controls are.
First off, "Up" is jump. Like on the C64.
Then "Dash" is on space.
So I find myself endlessly dashing into things when I try to jump; and it's not rebindable.
I hate when stuff like this is changed for the sake of it; conventions exist for a reason.
Say left and right click was swapped because the designer felt it matched their artistic vision. Nah.
The next button you're introduced to is "Alt", to return the terrain to normal. Also feels completely out of nowhere, but whatever.
On Top of that, the controls are just a bit sketchy *Anyway*...
- Sometimes dash stops working, and I can't progress properly because I can't jump back over the area I just jumped across. I can still dash up, down, right, but suddenly not left any more... unless I'm on the ground.
- I'll try to dash onto something and my blob will follow the deformed shape and fly into a trap at the end... instead of just dashing into the object and losing speed.
Maybe it's better with a joypad, but I'm just finding myself completely irritated by it right now. And it's worse because it's such a minor issue bringing the whole experience down.
