Usually sh!tpost games are transgressive and cynical affairs, but despite being drenched in BLOOD and macabre themes, Space Funeral is a strangely optimistic and welcoming adventure which eases the player through goofy, tongue-in-cheek humor which permeates its story, battle system, and MSPaint-like art style. No matter how much blood or dismemberment it gives us, the horrors of the game are always aesthetic without any actual horrific substance- it gives a charming and nostalgic feeling of playing pretend monsters at recess in school.
The battle system, which has a random event mechanic which can utterly break the game in hilarious ways, is another great mix-up to the RPG Maker formula. While it's all very stock RPG2k3 battle mechanics outside of that, battles end quickly and feel more like opportunities for funny jokes to play out than actual fights. If you're looking for a challenge, Space Funeral probably isn't going to be your bag- but it more than makes up for that with a variety entertaining nonsense. I think that's really the important part.
With the extent that "surreal high-concept games" have permeated the RPG Maker 2003 system, it's an accomplishment that Space Funeral still manages to maintain a fresh and recognizable approach and identity. If you're in the mood for a very silly romp through a bloody cartoon horror world, I'd highly recommend Space Funeral.
