Growing Vengeance is a game that I wanted to enjoy, but it never
truly stuck with me. I respect the work with the sprites that
had to be put in and some of the mechanics. Unfortunately, much of this
game falters because of its priorities being in only one aspect rather
than the greater whole. Combat, while simple and decently balanced, much
of it provided little challenge despite its few attempts in doing so
(though the battle against the 6 tiny heroes is easily the best this
game has for fights since it demanded a hint of strategy to win). Three
basic elemental skills that Isabelle learns do the same thing, but have a
different animation so it feels redundant. Some of the custom
animations are off, like Firebolt for example. It is little distractions
like those that by themselves are not an issue, but together shows a
lack of polish. Finally, the power fantasy itself is not fully realized.
Sure, she grows and gain increasingly better stat gains but at no point
did I actually feel powerful. I feel like I am going through the
motions, even after I achieve grow 7. I beaten the game and still felt a
sense of emptiness from it all. I can talk about the unimaginative map
design, the soundtrack, or the messy dialogue, but that strays beyond
the point of this game's primary issue and only highlights the lack of
polish. In short, it is by no means a terrible game. It is, however,
rough and should be revised.
One last thing that will be
independent of my review of your game, so take this with a grain of
salt, I do not like Isabelle. I get the idea that she goes on a huge
power trip, but she was never the fun evil character I wanted to get
behind. Lucile is the best girl and deserves better.
