A Smouldering Lighthouse rated Wisp 2.0

A downloadable game.

A super interesting duet game about a lost mortal and a lonely wisp.

Lots of cool things happening here:

  • Multi-use cards that randomize prompts, act as a resource to shift the narrative, and determine the game's epilogue.
  • Evocative, flexible prompts that guide players through the sometimes sweet, sometimes tragic, sometimes horrible events that set the tone of the game.
  • Randomization and agency, carefully balanced to create unexpected experiences without pigeonholing the players.
  • Narrative malleability, in spite of a focused theme and premise -- which is how I like it.

One word to anyone reading the itch page: I think most folks are more likely to have a 2 hour experience than a 4-5 hour one. This is a plus for me -- I like games that comfortably fit in a weekday evening! -- but I think it's good to know that going in. Even going through the entire deck of 52 cards, at the recommended 3 minutes per scene, you're still only coming in at around 2.5 hours.

Anyway. Wisp is a great addition to the growing collection of intriguing, fun, emotionally thoughtful duet games that are (finally!) springing up in the hobby. You'll like it.
