A true testament of love! Endless respect all around, but Umineko's my #1 fav ever, so I gotta get pedantic and rip out your guts in a meandering, critique format <3
OBVIOUSLY I found it a total delight to read as a Umineko fan, buuuut besides the narrative potential from the Hachijo Tohya stuff, idk I thought it came off as a bit needlessly redundant overall. As because the story chose to forgo most developments from Episode 3 and beyond, it essentially just amounts to being an abridge of Episode 2 again. With none of the gameboard characters/developments rly mattering, and the only new "WOW factor" being the appearance of that dapper blue haired fellow. The logic battle game meta and Battler brain progression essentially being stuck at the level they were at around the Ep2 point in the story.
I know the focus is on seeing Battler get to theorycraft with a human ally, and through that maybe create some parallels with the Hachijo Tohya of the future who gets to fight this new manifestation of another Rokkenjima perspective, but I had trouble getting invested because of this overarching kind of derivative feeling I had. I found it frustrating to watch a follow up to the massive L Battler took coming off of Ep2 be so consequence free and similar in structure to the previous without seeing Beato introduce some new magic-y stuff or element as punishment for his loss. In fact Beato in general felt kind of flat and nerfed in this one. You totally nailed her mannerisms (save for her not making a single awful food analogy anywhere), but because she's mostly acting as the 3rd wheel for Battler and Riyu's gay sex here, I thought she didn't get much to do besides her usual "endless torturing" shtick, and it bothered me that her continued relationship with Battler took such a massive backseat. Which I didn't like! Therefore I'm mentioning it!!!
I thought more of a point would be made that the game between Beatrice and Battler exists solely as a bout of love between mystery author and reader, and that the forced inclusion of some new 3rd wheel to intrude on the standard progression of their relationship would eventually annoy Battler or Beato to some degree. And while I suppose both parties do have their own respective breakups with the guy; it never felt like those two realizing that was the point of the story or anything of that sort. And it ultimately just ends with Battler learning things he already does cooler in Ep3 onward anyway. With the actions in the game-world not really paralleling the real-world resolution too strongly by the end, I thought.
I think I'm complaining needlessly though. Those two learning that they loved each other was the entire point of Ep4 and beyond already, right? Why bother writing what was already done there, right? I guess I don't read enough fan-fiction and am probably going off-base trying to pit this exactly up against the complete story of Umineko. This is just for love in the end, and despite any nagging qualms I might have, its so OBVIOUSLY a solid showing all the same. Even in their quick abridged forms, everyone feels in character, and the presentation - just the same - feels just like the real deal. I saw NO MENTION of any puppets having their strings cut, and we could have totally used more Ryukishi ellipses, but BRO it was a pleasant throwback to my fav food. just - whatEVER. well done! <HAVE A NICE DAY>
