Valantar rated Last Call

A downloadable game for Windows.

It feels strange saying I enjoyed this game, though I did despite the horror of  the events described. The use of voice recognition reminded me of descriptions of merritt k's empathy machine, though speaking to a computer that (mostly) recognises what you are saying is ultimately quite unlike being asked to touch a non-touchscreen on a PC. Still, the effect is somewhat the same, of a weird yet intimate connection, where the absence (of a person being talked to) somehow enhances the feeling of intimacy, creating its own presence of a sort, while at the same time obviously being very, very dissimilar from listening and responding to someone actually telling a story like the one the game presents. The contrast between the highly emotionally laden voice input and the knowledge that nobody is actually listening is poignant, though I don't exactly know in what way. The postcard presentation of the story/poem were especially interesting to me in contrast with my spoken responses, giving a feeling that I was present myself, looking at someone else's life, but also playing as someone else looking back at their own life. The mix of these two perspectives - I wouldn't say they could be separated even if I wanted to - makes this a really interesting and touching experience. The graphics, audio, level design and interaction all complement each other beautifully, creating what I felt was a phenomenologically "realistic" overall feel - as in feeling genuine, emotionally and physically present, as it would feel to experience that situation.

One _tiny_ point: I would love it if you added an option to flip the mouse Y axis.
