All hail the roguelike!
I do love roguelikes, and MidBoss is a very fun roguelike. It doesn’t have the kind of procedurally generated levels that I expect with a roguelike, but MidBoss is an interesting roguelike because it doesn’t really matter what the levels are like. The reason is, you’re an imp who is tired of being where they are in the hierarchy of creatures in this dungeon. You’re going to escape, and you can because you can possess other creatures. When you do, you gain power because you learn all their skills and abilities.
And the game is kind of staggering with the different types of monsters that you can possess and the skills you’ll get for levelling them up. I’ve only played through 3 levels, after getting killed at least 3-4 times, and I still haven’t really seen the bottom of the well of the skills on those three levels. There’s a lot more ahead of me.
That can be a little intimidating. I know I was like “wait, I have to know this” and then a minute later I was like “wait, I have to know that now too?” That continued on for a while but it only feels like there’s a lot to learn because there are so many details to pick up on. The basic mechanics are pretty straight forward, same with the stats and everything on the larger level. It’s just easy to get lost in the details. I mean you can even set the potions to random up so you don’t know what they are from session to session. The game throws curveballs at you, but always gives you a way to learn what’s going on.
Which is good because that’s where the replayability lies. Trying to find new ways to go through the levels, trying to figure out what the best combinations are beating the game with them. I know that I fast forwarded through the dialogue, mostly because it’s not particularly memorable. It’s a lot of “well this sucks, guess I’m outta here losers” which is fine the first time but with the amount of replays you’ll get of this game it’s enough to make me glad there’s a fast forward button.
That shouldn’t dissuade you from picking up Midboss. If you want to learn everything about this game, you’ll certainly get hours upon hours upon hours of entertaining.
