Holy cow.
I thought this game was good from the screenshots. Then I read it.
I haven't been this thoroughly wowed by a game since Blades in the Dark.
The prose is hauntingly beautiful, the layout is elegant, seamlessly fading into the background and evoking the setting with whispers rather than shouts.
And the mechanics! This takes LUMEN and bends all the rules beautifully. You get a selection of clearly defined Wardens that all have a role and a story to tell, and powers that reinforce both story and role.
There are books that make writing look easy, that tell such good stories that they inspire people to become writers.
There are books that make people think that anyone, even they, can be a writer.
And then there are books that showcase the art of writing (and of game design), the books that scare off new writers and convince them that the skill required is beyond them.
HEDGE is that third class of work. It's truly remarkable, and the creators should be proud.
....Now I just have to get someone to run it for me 😁
